Summary
May 1992, and after four LAPD officers were acquitted after the savage beating of Rodney King, Los Angeles is ablaze. As looting and burning take over the city, law and order are swept away in a tidal wave of violence. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. With no effective police presence on the streets, murder just got a whole lot easier - and investigating them got a whole lot harder.
Escorted by National Guard soldiers from murder scene to murder scene, Harry and his colleagues are only able to do the bare minimum in terms of collecting evidence. And for Harry that's not enough. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice, and her tragedy starts to eat into his soul. But then, 20 years later, Harry finds himself working in the Open Unsolved Unit, and suddenly the past comes back to haunt him once again, in a way he could never have imagined.
Read by Michael McConnohie. Michael McConnohie has had a long career as both an on-camera and voiceover actor. He was two of the original Transformers as well as a GI Joe in the cartoon series which is still airing today, and has lent his voice to countless TV shows and motion pictures. Not bad, but...
I have always enjoyed Michael Connelly's books, and the story of this book isn't bad, but not the best. The narrator however I found extremely irritating. The way he read the book was like a sixties american newsreader at times - especially early on n the book. So either he gets better or I got used to it!

Not classic Bosch but still very good
This isnt an absolutely class Harry Bosch tale but it is still very well written, plotted and read. The plot has a gratifying number of red herrings leading you off in one direction before doubling back. I cant say more for fear of spoilers! So recommended but not the right story to start with if youre a Bosch newcomer.

Disappointed
I was disappointed in this Harry B book. The pace was very slow and over a 10 hour read it wasn't until the last hour and a half that it picked up and caught my attention. Up untiI then I never had difficulty in putting it down. Generally I like Micheal Connolly and the Harry B books but this wasn't one of his better ones.

Bosch is at it again
Harry Bosch continues to do what he does best. Relentlessly pursuing justice whilst rebelling against conformity. Once again the powers that be are against him. Connelly again keeps the story flowing whilst being extremely insightful , it's difficult to stop listening. If you like Bosch you won't be disappointed.

Shame about the narrator
Another great Bosch book from Michael Connelly but spoiled for me by the narration. Picked up at times but in general could have been a newsreader. He read at times as if he had lost interest and was just plodding on. Much better with Len Cariou who genuinely brought the book to life. I had to persevere at times but didn't want to miss out on a book in the series. Hoping the next one will be better with Titus Welliver.

Best Yet!!
What did you love best about The Black Box?
Having read/listened to all the Bosch books, this is by far the best story so far. I really liked how Michael Connelly has created a story from the past and brought it into the future. Similar to a couple of others since bosch has been in the open unsolved unit. But this story had me hooked from start to finish. Great story that comes together very nicely. Connelly is a genius the way he puts all this together. From Bosch starting with one small clue that leads him on a journey to find the truth.
Who was your favorite character and why?
As always, Harry Bosch.
Which character – as performed by Michael McConnohie – was your favorite?
Bosch.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely. Was hard to stop this when I had to. But got through it in two days.
Any additional comments?
Please keep them coming Michael. I am at a loss without my fix of Bosch's determination and skill for finding justice.

Bosch is back!
Would you listen to The Black Box again? Why?
complex plot, realistic policing, fast interesting plot. Great characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Harry off course, this guy just will not stop, ever.
What does Michael McConnohie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He simply sounds the way I imagine Harry to speak.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yeah, but that would give away the plot. Needless to say Bosch gets himself into very sticky situations.
Any additional comments?
If you are a Bosch fan, download this one, you will love it...

Michael Connelly is my favorite author but I could not get into this book. It starts off very very slowly and only picks up steam about three quarters in. That, paired with the incredibly slow pace McConnohie reads at, made it very sub par in my opinion. If your gunna listen to this book I would recommend listening to it at 1.25 pace at least.

Bosh is back !!
I felt that the last few Michael Connelly novels were disappointingly repetitive and far less exciting than the first ones. The plots were not credible and lacking interest. The character of Hyeronimous Bosh was also fading and lacking the intensity that used to make him so attractive.
The Black Box reconciles me with both Connelly and Bosh ; i listened to the book in 48 hours and -to say the least- i really got into the story.
