Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

In a year when South Korea announced that its new robotics museum will be built by robots, and French cheese terrorists put a camembert through every French MP's letterbox, The Book of the Year returns with another dose of barely believable yet bona fide facts and stories from the past 12 months.

Each week for the past five years, Dan, James, Anna and Andy - the creators of the award-winning, chart-topping comedy podcast No Such Thing as a Fish - have wowed each other and millions of listeners with the most astonishing trivia they have learned over the previous seven days. Now, once again, they have scoured the newspapers for hidden gems and transformed another year's worth of weird and wonderful happenings into one uplifting book that you won't be able to put down.

Discover how TV channel Hallmark has so many new Christmas movies that it will now start airing them from July.

Be amused to learn that a thousand people were hired to attend a rally in Kiev to protest against the practice of hiring people to attend rallies.

Share the excitement of the scientists who discovered that more attractive monkeys have smaller testicles.

Revel in the news that Carlsberg launched a new advertising campaign admitting it is 'probably not the best beer in the world'.

Feel a little sympathy for Ariana Grande, who got a Japanese tattoo she intended to say 'Seven Rings' but that actually ended up reading 'small charcoal grill'.

From ecologically minded Birmingham drug dealers to dodgy Belgian petanque players, The Book of the Year 2019 is an eye-opening tour of yet another incredible year you didn't know you'd lived through. And the authors have promised not to mention Brexit. Much.

A great winter pick-me-up

Have been listening to this series of audio books since the first one a few years ago and it never fails to be a good pick-me-up for that gloomy start of winter period.
It’s 10 hours of the lovable, friendly people from the weekly podcast, so there’s about a weeks worth of listening to get you through the chores with a smile, although you’ll definitely need to re-listen a few times to take it all in.
Careful where you listen though as it’s hard to keep a straight face - it has me nearly in tears walking down the high street as you just can’t hold back the laughter at some of their jokes.
Cracking work guys, have a great Christmas!

Can’t get enough of the elves!

Great audiobook! I listened to bits of it with the physical book open as well, and there is so much additional content, anecdotes, and general humour and ribbing you’d expect from the gang! Can’t wait for Book of the Year 2020!

A delight every year.

Listening to the audiobook version of a book that sprung out of a podcast is a no-brainer. We already know and love the narrators, and all the bonus material is a treat — extracts from the live shows, additional facts, and hilarious bloopers. You won’t believe what Dan found at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, but because James made a pun out of the mistake, you do get to find out.

It’s reasonably light on Tr*mp and Br*xit, and any mentions are indeed hilarious and minimally triggering.

Makes the year seem better than you thought it was

so much of what is given to us in the news cycle is negative. the team at No Such Thing As A Fish have sorted through all that mess to bring the weirdest, funniest, and most wonderous news from 2019 to you in neatly organized, alphabetical, bite-sized chunks. as it is read by four people, you get the feeling of being in a room with friends telling stories together which makes for a very cozy and fun listening experience. also, because there's no real narrative, you can pick it up and listen for a few minutes at any time without any of that "wait, go back, what did I miss?" so it's perfect for people (like me) who always struggle with that. thanks to Anna, Andy, Dan, and James for another wonderful Book of the Year!

Best part of every year!

We all know 2019 has been rough on both sides of the Atlantic, and it becomes a mite more tolerable when, once the year wraps up, you can look forward to four brilliant elves recapping all the important bits. Once again, they’ve done an amazing job!

Thank you

I’ve been listening to these guys for years and they’ve taken me on many a road-trip and aeroplane ride. Informative, funny, and so much added information.

Thanks for the podcast, thanks for the books. Really appreciate you all.
