Summary

"The path to debauchery is strewn with good intentions...."

Benjamin Snowley is trapped in a most distressing predicament. He’s been feeling poorly and after having recently recovered from influenza, he knows that the fault for his declining health lies in a vice he wouldn’t dare mention in polite conversation.

Onanism, self-pollution, masturbation. All names for the same sinful affliction.

For Benjamin, it all started back at school, where he first encountered the immoral Frederick Cory. Ever since then, the man has been plaguing Benjamin’s dreams and causing most unnatural urges.

Now is the time for all the infatuation nonsense to stop. With the help of an unorthodox doctor and an indecent proposition to a young stablehand, Benjamin will rid himself of the vile addiction.

But can the experimental treatment be enough to make him forget his feelings for Frederick?

Warning: Contains a clueless young man on a futile quest for chastity and a libertine artist eager to rid him of that goal.

A lighter story from this author

The last few books and audiobooks I have consumed from this author have been very, very dark. Here we get a much lighter story. It has plenty of emotional depth and nifty historical detail, but while the characters have some self-exploration and self-acceptance to get through, the reader is taken through it with tongue rather planted firmly in cheek and a twinkle in the eye. I thought the narrator's rather gruff voice was perfect for this, and he too sounded like he was in on the fun. Loved the characters, loved the story and its ending and thought the narrators voice and tone were perfect.

Enjoyable Regency Romp

I am not usually drawn to historical books but this one caught my eye and I am so pleased it did. The story is an irreverent take on the views of Male sexuality in the Regency period. I listened with a smile on my face at Benjamin’s nativity as he tried in vain to cure himself. In this attempt we are treated to delicious liaison scenes that KA Merikan writes so well.
I was not totally convinced about the narration at the start but James Reily’s style grew on me. Making it overall a very enjoyable listen.

Wear headphones

Oh my. I have no idea what to say about this... Hawt, hawt, hawt! It's not often I blush listening to an audio book but this one made me. And even though I had headphones in I couldn't bring myself to listen to it in the supermarket!
If you're expecting hearts and flowers you've come to the wrong authors. The title says it all, and Benjamin gets pleasured over and over and over again.
Heed the warnings, they are not there to make up the word count ;)

Love it!

As always, the authors surprised me. Such a dirty and naughty book and yet it's historical! It was unique listen and I can't wait to listen more of James Reily, his voice is a little different from what I was used to, but amazing nonetheless.

The Art of Mutual Pleasure

K.A. Merikan never cease to amaze me with the variety and imagination they bring to their writing.
In this Regency romp we see Benjamin Snowley’s decent into what he feels is “debauchery” but is actually his sexual awakening, in a time when even self pleasure is something to be ashamed of and thought of as an affliction.
As always the characters are well developed and the story addictive, just make sure you listen to this one with earphones in, it’s as dirty as hell but funny too.
James Riley did a great job narrating, he was perfect in this historical setting. Hope to hear more from him.

Historical and fun!

Story: I loved the narration style in this one! The vocabulary and overall feel presented the MC's point of view and emotions perfectly! This time machine of a story was a pure pleasure to listen to!

Narration: I could not imagine a better voice for this one. The accent is everything here and matches the content perectly!

The Quest for Chastity

Benjamin is a young man who has been taught that masturbation is wrong. Not only wrong, but will cause loss of strength, ill health, and blindness. In today’s society with modern medicine and progressive notions, most people no longer hold these beliefs. In Regency England, though, these notions abounded. He’s desperate so he seeks out the help of one very unconventional doctor who makes a very odd suggestion as to how Benjamin might regain his strength. Dutifully, Benjamin propositions a man working in his stable and they begin an unconventional relationship. I was touched by Tom’s gentleness and wondered if this might be the central love story.

Alas, ‘twas not to be. Tom went home and Benjamin returned to the city, determined to maintain the new health and vigor he’s found. His methods are, to say the least, unorthodox. When he encounters Frederick all bets are off. He’d always been enamored with the man but having sex with a man was unthinkable. Or had been.

Frederick is amused to come across his former classmate in flagrante delicto with not one but several men. What happened to the uptight student who believed fornication between two men led to eternal damnation? Having always had an eye on Benjamin, Frederick sets about to put the young man’s mind at ease that there’s nothing wrong with sex between men.

Now, the spoilers for this book are meant to entice the reader into trying this m/m Regency romance. I don’t do many historicals but am glad I picked up this one. I find K.A. Merikan books hit and miss with me and this one was a hit. I enjoyed it. James Reily narrates their British books and I find he does a good job. He handled this one with aplomb and I look forward to the next historical by this writing duo.

Fantastic Story & I Really Enjoyed James Reily!

I enjoyed this book so much when I read it three years ago that I jumped at the chance to listen to K.A. Merikan’s The Art of Mutual Pleasure in audio, and I’m so glad I did!

New to me narrator James Reily does a marvelous job. What a variety of voices he comes up with for this varied cast of characters. Tom’s tenderness, Frederick’s teasing and his affection, the gruff working class men, every one is unique and spot on. Best of all, he absolutely gets Benjamin’s transformation. From innocent schoolboy, to stuffy, buttoned up prude, then finally blossoming into the wanton man he was meant to be. Listening to Benjamin gradually coming undone is truly a 'pleasure'.

Read it, listen to it, either way The Art of Mutual Pleasure is fantastic.

Historical erotica

Poor Benjamin is such a naive and trusting soul.
He's desperately trying to resolve his delicate issues and in the process has a sexual awakening that involves his former frenemy Frederick.
Seductive and captivating as Benjamin is thoroughly debauched and loves it.
James Riley did a superb job on the narration.

3.5 stars!

A wildly fun romp. You have to completely suspend all disbelief at the door, but if you do, you’re in for a really good time. Benjamin is so naive, but it is because of that naivety that he is able to find out what he really wants; and boy does he go for it. An extremely steamy, enemies to lovers story that will have you simultaneously laughing out loud and fanning yourself from all the heat. James Reily is a new to me narrator who did a wonderful job bring the characters and this story to life.
