Summary

P. T. Barnum's lecture, "The Art of Money-Getting", extolls his virtues for success in business. He warns people to not believe in false economy. The simplest pattern for success, he says, is to spend less than we make. Barnum weaves his lesson with proverbs from philosophers, rags-to-riches stories, and his personal experiences in the business world.

The guidelines are delivered through a series of maxims on which P. T. elaborates where he sees fit. He maintains that a true businessman rarely indulges in alcohol or tobacco.

The print edition of the lecture was published by Ward, Lock, & Co. Hints and Helps: How to Make a Fortune is an alternate title for this work.
