Summary

A sensitive and realistic look at the spiritual life and practices of the Amish.

This second book by the authors of the award-winning Amish Grace sheds further light on the Amish, this time on their faith, spirituality, and spiritual practices. They interpret the distinctive practices of the Amish way of life and spirituality in their cultural context and explore their applicability for the wider world.

Using a holistic perspective, the book tells the story of Amish religious experience in the words of the Amish themselves. Due to their long-standing friendships and relationships with Amish people, this author team may be the only set of interpreters able to provide an outsider-insider perspective. This book:

  • Expains how Amish practices can be applied to the wider world

Written by authors with unprecedented access to the Amish community and in a lively and engaging style, The Amish Way will appeal to anyone who has wanted to know more about the inner workings of the Amish way of life.

Beautiful Book That Made Me Admire the Amish

This is a wonderful book that gives a fascinating overview of Amish life. The book addresses many of the questions I had about this fascinating community. Do they ever use electricity and technology? Occasionally, but as a general rule no. Do they pay taxes? Yes. Do they use health insurance? No, but the community pools resources when someone in the community has extraordinary expenses, which is sort of like insurance. How many young people return to the community for baptism after Rumspringa? Upwards of 90%. The books goes into just enough detail about various topics.

I found myself envying many aspects of Amish life such as the simplicity, humility, strong sense of faith, and strong community. God knows that this is missing from so many lives in the West, including my own. There's a type of freedom in giving up on worldly pursuits and dedicating your life to the next world, the Kingdom of God. The authors do a great job of portraying Amish life and they seem to have a genuine passion and empathy for this community. The narrator is very soothing and reminds one of a preacher who might lead sermons in a Church. I highly recommend this book! It may surprisingly lead you to great admiration of this captivating way of life.
