Summary

James Hillman was a past master of alchemical psychology. This field uses metaphors derived from ancient alchemy to elucidate deep structures in the creative imagination. Creative processes are not random. By studying alchemical psychology we come to understand ourselves and other humans in surprising ways that frequently diverge sharply from the habitual understandings we have unconsciously absorbed from the cultures in which we were raised. These new awarenesses can engender unexpected new vitality and wonder.

A lecture/ workshop recording

I think I’d just like to mention that this is not a “book” in the strictest sense of the word but a workshop Hillman has given that has been recorded. The quality of the recording as various people speak in different points of the room can be fuzzy, but Hillman is clear. I think the conversational manner of his delivery as he interacted with others was of great benefit when approaching this complex topic. Really enjoyed this.

Very profound reflection on psychotherapy and tran

Though the quality of sound could be better, especially for questions. if not, highly recommended.

So so good

It's harsh to give this a 1 star review. Listen to the sample and see if you can deal with the sound before purchasing. it's an old lecture and it is frustrating that you can't hear the questions. I think even a voice over would be better than leaving it, but it is an amazing lecture on alchemy. One of the best I've heard and we're lucky to have it for 7.99 or whatever paid. I prefer that it's a lecture and not an audiobook because it's much more digestible and real. There's some real gold in this so I've decided to listen again and take notes like a lecture. If you can handle the sound quality then it's SO worth it.

If he had repeated every question I would have enjoyed it more

A really good intro to the work of James Hillman. You’ve got to appreciate it’s a live seminar and make room for the questions. Otherwise it’s very enjoyable.

Very interesting alchemical psychological lecture

Some brilliant images of alchemy to free psychology from literalism and fixedness . Moving through states , having different starting places, and cooking making things on the alchemical stove . I found this book /lecture to be very inspiring

Hillman's Voice

I am delighted that Hillman's talks are being released. He was an impressive speaker. These lectures are interesting not only for the fantastic subject matter but the way Hillman's delivers them. He doesn't see to follow too strictly to words pre-written but rather seems to have something like a general plan from which he brings in elements and quotations here and there as and when he conjures them in his remarkable mind. His engagement with his audience is captivating responding to feelings and murmurings in the crowd and diverting or directing his talk based upon them. Highly recommended.

Great thought provoking set of lectures

Very good - lecture format but a lot of information - good for beginners to understand the language of alchemy applied to psychology

I adore Hillman but..

this is not a book.. this is a coversation he had, a lecture, with someone interrupting every other minute, so often he can’t complete a thought..
And you often can’t hear the question.
Many may not mind it. I found it quite frustrating and irritating..
still it’s james hillman..
