Fresh from his trip to Britain, Falco needs to re-establish his presence in Rome. Roman law was very complex and lawyers long winded and opportunistic - see Cicero and successors! - which allows both twists in plot and humour. This novel has a more domestic setting than many of Falco's adventures, especially those abroad, but it's not just a 1st century "Aga Saga". It seems to need more focussed attention than some, and I do wish it had had been broken into the short chapters of the book, not long, random tracts, where it's hard to navigate if you need to go back.

A story full of clever twists and turns , marvellous prose that has you wanting the narrator to read quickly so you get to the next juicy morsel . I love the Marcus Didius tales and all their characters . Ancient Rome brought to live with such colourful relish

This story is very involved and it would have benefitted from a little more vocal characterisation and being read at a slightly slower pace to enable the ‘legalese’ to be absorbed I think.

Read at a spirited pace

Falco is back in the familiar surroundings of Rome, but in focusing on one legal case, this book is quite different to the others. I enjoyed it, quickly getting used to the change in narrator. Jamie Glover tends more towards reading rather than performing, but this suited the story, and is perhaps why the change of narrator didn't bother me, as familiar characters didn't suddenly acquire strange new accents.

I just loved this one. The story is great and whilst It should really have been read by Christian (the master) I think Jamie did a good job - he’s an excellent narrator but just not the best choice for Falco.

Lynsey Davis is superb. She absolutely brings this ancient Roman informer and his family to life.

Probably Falco at his very best
