Summary

Sophie Mills has worked her Manolo Blahniks off to reach the near-top of her profession. And she's very happy with her priorities in life: her job, her neurotic cat Artemis, and her passion for shoes. After all, relationships only get in the way. And as for children? She hasn't even begun to think about them yet.

Until one day an unexpected visitor brings news of a strange inheritance and Sophie is suddenly, out of the blue, in sole charge of two children under the age of six. But motherhood can't be all that hard, can it?

Within 24 hours, her make-up is smeared all over the bathroom, Artemis has taken up residence on top of her wardrobe, and Sophie is in despair. And all her unconventional mother can suggest is Dr Roberts' Complete Dog Training and Care Manual.

Determined to rise to the challenge, Sophie soon realises that she'll need more than a business plan to cope with all this...

Brilliant

This book and the follow-on; Accidental Family are both spellbinding and you will have difficulty dragging yourself away. I almost felt I was there with them. Superb narration and left me wanting another follow-on. Highly recommended.

Solid chick lit with an different premise

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. If you like this genre I doubt you'd be disappointed.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Accidental Mother?

I found some of the specific details used to illustrate how out of her depth the main character was to be irritating, such as mixing microwave meals on a plate and feeding to small children - no adult would really be that clueless! However other touches about their struggle to cope as a unit were well written and overall I still really liked the characters.

Which character – as performed by Juanita McMahon – was your favourite?

The children were well characterised.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, an easy listen.

Engrossing

Slow to get into but once it gets going you can't stop listening. Has some bad language which seems to have become a staple in books these days which is a shame and doesn't add a thing to the story.

Frustrating

As a mother I was screaming at the Alexa device. I didn't even manage to finish the book as it wound me up so much I was angry and found no enjoyment in the listen.

Surprising Escapism

A slow start and lengthy plot lines should put you off but the characters really get under your skin and you can't stop listening. You will experience a wide range of emotions reading this, real tear jerking sadness, laughter and excitement. I am delighted there is a sequel 'The Accidental Family' to look forward to and am just waiting for Audible to get it!

A straightforward chick lit

I bought this because I’ve liked Rowan Coleman’s more intriguing books. They usually have an element of wonder, a suspension of the real world. This is just a chick lit romantic story. Predictable but enjoyable enough.

Not one for me!

Thought this would be a funny, light and cheerful book but no. The narrator just felt wrong and so many things in the first half of the book annoyed me well enough to just skip the second half of it!
