I’m guessing the author is a massive vegan! Every single opportunity to mention veganism, vegan food, vegan food swaps for eggs or milk or cheese is leapt upon with enthusiasm.
The story isn’t bad, but stop with the absolutely relentless vegan propaganda.
Normally this book would be right up my street, but I won’t be listening to any more of this author’s work, because by the end I wanted to scream as vegan cupcakes, or vegan eclairs were dropped unnecessarily into the story YET again.

However, if you’re vegan, dig in…. You’ll find it mouthwatering!

Heard a lot worse but found it a bit “Scooby Doo” Tbh the plots.
Worth a read for mild pleasant entertainment though.

A very sweet and engaging story. Beautifully narrated. A very pleasant listen. My only negative response is the narrator constantly pronouncing the word herb as ‘erb’ as if the H doesn’t exist. And the word herb comes up in the book a lot.

Wasn’t expecting too much, but I really enjoyed this book. The reader’s story telling is really engaging, characters voices she uses help the story unlike some audio books where they just distract. Nothing offensive or too adult either, I’d recommend this book for young adults as well as adults. Generally a good all rounder. Looking forward to book 2.

As a vegan myself I get fed up with hearing about meat eating characters in books and it made a change to have a vegan central character. I have to say that I think the food I eat is nicer than most of the meals mentioned in this novel but perhaps not as healthy as Zoe’s and Dorian’s meals. Alchemy is also interesting (Dorothy Dunnett’s wonderful Francis Crawford of Lymond and Sevigny series introduced me to alchemy over 50 years ago) and herbal medicine. I found this novel rich in so much that interests me and I liked the main character although her forbearance with the brats was definitely where we parted company.
Clearly reading some of the other reviews Gigi’s books aren’t appealing to meat eating customers but as I said at the start of my review it certainly makes a change from carnivores ramming their eating habits down everyone’s throats. I have already added the rest of the Accidental Alchemist Mysteries to my audio library but the next listen is going to be David Blake’s Storm Force.
