A superb polemic on modern times

First of all, I do not agree with Peter Hitchens on many issues (not least of which are his attitudes to censorship) but one does not have to agree with him to appreciate the strength of his arguments. Hitchens achieves what a great writer should always strive for, he makes you think.
The backbone of Hitchens argument is that a Cultural Revolution has been slowly taking place in Britain, which has reached its pinnacle under Blair, and neither the Thatcher nor Major governments made any attempt to reverse it as they never fully understood it.
First of all, Hitchens adheres to a very firm traditionalism that would be too much for many, however, he argues his points so well that it is impossible to dismiss them as old school fuddy duddery.
Secondly, it contains various insights into the cultural disdain for the fabric of the culture held by the left, and vivid illustrations of how the left have succeeded in their prerogative of diluting the culture.
The main selling point is that it's extraordinarily readable (or in this case listenable) and keeps one thinking all the way through.
Additionally, the narration by Hitchens himself is an additional bonus as Hitchens brings the book to life in a way no one else could.

What a listen. My country and culture now make sense. I would recommend this as a must listen to book. It's content and perspective, really should be taught in school - hahaha Peter. Go and make your own schools by seeking out real wisdom like this. Keep going Peter Hitchens you are educating a millennial generation that have been consistently sold a lie.

Enjoyable

Plenty of hot air but also many interesting points. I enjoy listening to his arguments and views even if I don't necessarily agree with all of them. All in all an interesting and entertaining listen.

Though much is taken, much abides;

This is Peter Hitchens' first book, in which he sets out the framework of his Burkean, Anglican & Conservative view of Britain. It takes the form of a lamentation for the peculiarly English civilisation that spanned the 18th & 19th centuries, and documents the extent to which it was demolished in the 20th. The funerals of Winston Churchill & Diana Spencer are used to bracket the period in which the destruction was most rapid.

There is not a cheerful book, it is clearly not meant to be a balanced account of the postwar period. However, cynicism is tempered with dry wit and it made me laugh in a number of places.

The book seems at least as relevant now as it was when first published. The last chapter deals with the serious possibility of Britain being dissolved into a federation of European states.

Few good writers are also accomplished speakers, let alone feel as passionately about their subject as Peter clearly does. This audio book benefits greatly from being narrated by the author.

Amazing informative and most importantly the truth

As this book is narrated by the author you can really appreciate the passion and importance of his words.
Peter Hitchens has really mastered the art of delivering information directly to you so you understand exactly what he is saying.

Generation X Should Listen To This

I left school in 1980 having learned nothing about the war years and virtually nothing about Britain in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. It wasn't part of the curriculum, it was probably deemed too recent to be taught as history.

I learned more from listening to this than from anything else that I had heard, read or watched before it. Peter Hitchens articulates his case clearly and enjoyably. 5 Stars all round.

Best Political Book Of The Century

A superb and informative read from start to finish. A very well formed analysis of how Britain has found itself where it is today and, more importantly, the lessons that should be taken from an unprecedented social upheaval and cultural revolution.

Peter is by far my favourite social commentator and does not disappoint with this superb book, I shall be reading The War We Never Fought next. Thanks, Peter!

Good read

Very informative for someone who in those days try to find out what are British values. As the multiculturalism is definitely is not.
It explain how the Britain end up where it is now without any identity, proud and culture.
