Summary

It all happened so quickly. First, animals became infected with the virus and their meat became poisonous. Then, governments initiated the Transition. Now, 'special meat' - human meat - is legal.

Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans, only no one calls them that. He works with numbers, consignments, processing. One day, he's given a gift to seal a deal: a specimen of the finest quality. He leaves her in his barn, tied up, a problem to be disposed of later.

But the specimen haunts Marcos. Her trembling body, her eyes that watch him, that seem to understand. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost - and what might still be saved...

Shocking, brutal and fantastic writing

I binge listened to this novel in two days. I don't want to spoil things so all I will say is I found it dark, gory and frightening as it shines a mirror on humans and the awful things we do to "livestock".

The pacing is superb. It left me with a feeling of horror and of the ground crumbling beneath me.

the most thought provoking book I have ever listened to/read. there's little that disturbs me but this book did and that takes some going. such a deep story when you compare every part of it to the slaughter of our beautiful animals. thank you for an amazing book

Brilliantly icky

The ick factor in this book is real, but if you can get past it, this dystopian story is very good: when animals become infected with a virus deadly to humans, cannibalism is legalised, and humans are farmed for consumption. The concept is unthinkable and completely taboo, but Ms Bazterrica’s skilful writing makes it almost believable. Some of the characters have a conscience, some are apathetic, and others are despicable, giving the reader an emotional workout. (TW: there is some animal cruelty in this book but it’s in context with the story.)

Bleak

I don't know what to say about this book other than make sure you're psychologically and emotionally in a good place before reading.

Excellent storytelling and narration, not to be missed!

Excellent narration, I felt totally engaged the whole way through. I particularly enjoyed the ending and did not see it coming!

Woahhh

This book broaches the essence of a proper, unyielding, and brutal dystopia. It represents a theme obviously explored before in fiction, but it is delivered in a uniquely bleak, violent, and tragic way. I won't give anything away, but I'll just say it's not for the faint of heart. The narration is beautifully delivered, and captures the essence of where the action happens so well. This is an unforgettable audiobook.
