About this listen

Three friends who met at an elite English boarding school take on the town - and the ton - one by one in this sparkling new series about love, loss, and lustrous gemstones, from New York Times best-selling author Jane Feather....

A fine romance...

Diana Sommerville seems to have it all - beauty, brains, and vast wealth, thanks to her family's ownership of a diamond mine abroad. But when her beloved brother dies in battle and leaves a lion's share of his estate to his best friend, Diana finds herself in a situation that seems scripted for the stage: sharing her family home with the man she used to love - and now loathes. Worse, her unfaithful former fiance has already moved in...

...or an excellent fake?

Rupert Lacey didn't expect Diana to take the news without a fight. Still, he didn't expect her to bring the battle directly to their newly shared doorstep - complete with a full set of trunks and a full set of orders to the staff. Yet there she is, bold, regal...magnificent as ever.

Now, they would face a formidable challenge: to ignore each other - and the unanswered questions that stood between them. The only sure thing is their still-blazing desire. But with a woman like Diana, it will take nothing less than a momentous misunderstanding, a missing prized mare, and a shocking revelation to restore a love that hasn't lost its shine....

Good narration, perfect for the genre and period. A tale of two fillies, the first the sister with a legacy to include the second: the racehorse filly. This Diana is a poor huntress, who acts and behaves more like prey, evading and baiting Rupert, who she does in fact like to see bare. Supposedly a Colonel of "the Regiment", he is her sometime lap dog and mostly disgruntled stalker. The action and events result mainly from misunderstandings, misrepresentations and rumours and are somewhat tiresome and predictable. No bodices are ripped, but bedroom doorways are crossed.

The filly and the hounds punctuate the performance as and when, but are irrelevant. Authors shouldn't include details of thoroughbred racing if they have no knowledge of the subject, it just sounds ridiculous. And at a time when hot water and piping was rare in homes even of the rich, quite how you send for a plumber seems curious indeed.

Enjoyed it as a freebee, but would've been unhappy to have paid for it.

IT WAS OK

A Tale of Two Fillies

The heroine is a spiteful and selfish young woman. Her immature behaviour is irritating. She doesn't deserve the long suffering hero who is the target of her malice. Excellent narration.

More conflict than romance

liked the storyline. The characters were quite original. A bit confusing though for a historical romance. They pretend to be married for respectability but are sleeping together and had been before the whole conflict.

Good book

Rosalyn Landor is such a great narrator, but there are limits to what she can save.

The heroine was on the one hand a spoiled brat and the other hand had lost her whole family and that trauma was put aside and not really examined.

Even though it was included I decided that I should not listen to it, since I would give it back if I would have paid for it.

Love the narrator but gave up anyway
