Summary

It has been 10 years since Jeanie Long was charged with the murder of 15-year-old Abigail Mantel. Now residents of the East Yorkshire village of Elvet are disturbed to hear of new evidence proving Jeanie’s innocence.

Abigail’s killer is still at large. For one young woman, Emma Bennett, the revelation brings back haunting memories of her vibrant best friend - and of that fearful winter's day when she had discovered her body lying cold in a ditch.

As Inspector Vera Stanhope makes fresh enquiries on the peninsula and villagers are hauled back to a time they hoped to forget, tensions begin to mount. But are people afraid of the killer or of their own guilty pasts?

Hard Work

Story is good but the narration is bad. After the Shetland stories these Vera novels are not on the same level. Apart from the Vera voice every other voice is bad. Male voices always sound like they suffer learning difficulties, female voices drift from Petunia in the 1970's coastguard public information films to Mavis in Coronation Street in one sentence. All very distracting from what could be a good story.

Dreadful narration

Love Ann Cleeves books and have used Audible for years. For the first time ever I don’t know whether I can stick with listening a book.

The narrator would be suited to a period romance but is completely unsuited to a detective or mystery book. Everything sounds patronising. I find it very hard to feel interested in the story even though it is the ninth Ann Cleeves book I’ve listened to and I’ve been totally engrossed by the others.

I can’t judge the story yet and would have left the star rating blank but that isn’t allowed.

Really engaging read

I read the reviews before choosing this book and although I felt it was right up my street, those reviews did cause me to hesitate. i neednt have worried. It was a twisty turn tale, well written and well performed, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and will buy more. Cant really understand the criticism of the narrator. It was a more than competent performance and i felt she gave our Vera a very believable and a realistic, authentic voice, as the author intended.

Brilliant novel.

I've read this years ago and have seen the episode it's based on, on TV. Neither held a candle to listening to this performance. simply excellent.

Bit long winded at the start

I am a big fan of Ann Cleeves writings and also of the narrator...a perfect combination.
I found my self going, “ Get on with it...WE WANT VERA!” at the very start as the build up and background was a little bit too long.
But...As usual, the story had so many twists and turns I felt dizzying! Kept me guessing right to the very end.
I would definitely recommend this just stick with it at the start.

Disappointed with the ending

Felt that the killer wouldn’t have been strong enough to over power either victim ( trying not to give it away )
