Another fantastic book from Chris Fox. You can't fault the action here with plenty of magic using soldiers in powered armour. Where there are Wizards there are dragons and this book has them by the bucket load. It even has what I can only assume is a reference to Snatch. There are loads of pop culture references for you to pick up on. can't wait to listen to the next one.

A fun and fast-moving blend of fantasy and science fiction that throws magic, advanced technology, spaceships, and large-scale warfare into the same blender—and somehow makes it work.

The premise is one of the biggest draws. Rather than choosing between traditional fantasy magic and futuristic technology, Fox combines the two to create a universe where powerful mages and advanced military hardware exist side by side. The result is packed with action, exploration, magical abilities, and escalating conflicts that keep the story moving at a good pace.

The progression is particularly enjoyable. Watching the protagonist learn to understand and develop his abilities gives the story that satisfying sense of growth that makes progression-focused fiction so easy to binge. There's plenty of combat and spectacle, but the underlying mystery surrounding the wider universe provides enough intrigue to keep things moving beyond simply throwing bigger weapons at bigger enemies.

Ryan Kennard Burke gives the audiobook a strong, energetic performance. His delivery fits the military and action-heavy elements particularly well, while his character work keeps the dialogue and larger cast easy to follow. He brings a good sense of urgency to the battles without making the quieter sections feel flat.

The combination of Fox's entertaining magitech concept and Burke's energetic narration makes Tech Mage a highly enjoyable start to the Magitech Chronicles.

A great listen for fans of progression fantasy, military science fiction, space battles, magic systems, and the wonderfully nerdy concept of asking, "What if a wizard had a spaceship?"
