About this listen
For Ages 9 to Adult
©1992 Marc Joel Levitt (P)1992 August House Publishers, Inc.Editor reviews
Levitt is both creator and performer in this collection of spooky New England tales. His style is distinctive, his voice clear and well-modulated, his characters fully voiced. Eerie sound effects and music are used extensively and appropriately. A feature of Levitt's style is a consistently slow pace and extensive repetition of both phrases and events. While at times these work to good effect, at other times they slow the story's pace and diminish excitement. The publisher's recommendation of an audience of nine and up is right on the mark as none of the stories are excessively gruesome or frightening.
Critic reviews
Winner of Audioworld's Golden Headset Award, Best Children's Audio "A welcome and eerie escape. Listeners will be entertained not only by this master storyteller but by the quality of the accompanying sound effects." ( School Library Journal)
The stories are spooky, but for small kids rather.
However, the atmosphere is great. Mostly because of the narration.
