About this listen

Drunk customers. Shoplifting raccoons. Otherworldly visitors. As night-shift clerk at the 24-hour gas station at the edge of town, Jack has pretty much seen it all.

That is, until his best friend reveals the body of a local politician hidden in the trunk of a car, setting off a chain of events with apocalyptic potential. Soon, Jack finds himself entangled in a supernatural conspiracy involving monster hunters, sociopaths, doomsday cultists, and...garden gnomes?

Armed with nothing but his wits, sarcasm, and alarming amounts of coffee, can Jack stay alive long enough to see another morning shift? Or will he, too, fall victim to the dark, ancient force infecting the dreams of everyone around him?

One thing’s for sure. He’s not getting paid enough for this.

really well performed, strange and unpredictable, funny and absurd. I would like it to hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

quirky and weird

This is a poor cousin of A L Martinez's "Gil's All Fright Diner". Interesting concept, some nice plot points and likeable characters, but it lost its way numerous times and was hard to follow. Narrator was good and the soundscaping was just right, not intrusive.

it was okay...

I did really enjoy this to start with. It had this great juxtaposition between creepy horror elements and a protagonist who could not care less about the horror around him. Think Friday The 13th where the potential victim asks Jason if he'd like a turn down service during his stay at the resort.

That being said the book was a bit like A Song of Ice and Fire in that there were many many plot lines intersecting with each other but many were seemingly just there for the sake of being there. There were also a number of thing like the CDC agents that felt incredibly immature and tiresome and really pulled me out of the story.

While the main character was incredibly relatable I did think that he could be an unreliable narrator and that's never been a literary device I've enjoyed. He is a good perspective to see the world from though.

This Audible version was theatrical too so you get foley effects like "He walked in the door" followed by a creaky door noise. This was good but if you are expecting a typical audiobook this isn't the case.

I would recommend this to horror fans but not everyone.

Good but got a bit samey

Jon Grilz and cast blows Jack's story out of the park! A must listen.
I had already heard a version of the on Jon's Creepy podcast and knew that I must listen to this at once and I was not disappointed. Jon's perfect narration and the rest of the voice cast did a wonderful job of this and I can't wait for Volume 2.

Great story and great story tellers
