Summary

Held captive from January 1987 to November 1991, for much of the time in solitary confinement, Terry Waite wrote his autobiography in his head. Here is his own heart-rending account of an existence robbed of companionship and of emotional, physical, and mental stimulation. He describes how his recollections of life from childhood onwards helped him endure a life of monotony and fear in captivity and reveals the inner strengths, which enabled him to survive his captors’ often savage treatment. He tells of his resolve never to have any regrets, any false sentimentality, and any self-pity.

Taken on Trust is a deeply moving self-portrait of the man behind the headlines. It has become one of the classic accounts of man’s survival at the limits of human endurance. Read by the author.

An exemplary journey shared -Faith in Action!

Brilliantly written and read, An informative and inspirational journey shared. This book has raised my awareness of the plight of hostages. It illustrates not only mans inhumanity to man, but also mans humanity to man. For me, the book was a message of hope, persistence and forgiveness in an unjust world. Insights in how to cope with struggles in adversity. Terry's experience of negotiating on behalf of hostages and the coping mechanisms he adopted in order to not only endure and survive five years of captivity... but emerge victorious! The book will help anyone dealing with adversity.

Brutal and poignant

Harrowing story of the fear, courage and selfless spirit of Terry Waite. A must read for anyone who doubts the inner strength of man.

Sincere but not as good as I was hoping.<br />

I had high hopes for this book but I can only say it was average. Its just a bit dull at times. I feel bad saying this as its a true story but perhaps I was expecting it to be more inspiring? It did inspire at times but its a bit high churchy for me.

Two stories woven cleverly together

the story of one man's struggle with the ordinary things of childhood and early life woven in between the story of a man out of his depth in a hostile and alien world
