Summary

Welcome to Fountain Reach. Ancient seat of the Aubuchon dynasty. Majestic setting of the White Stone tournament.

Alex Verus' (not necessarily reliable) reputation attracts all sorts. Most are plain bonkers. Yet there's one invitation he just can't refuse.

At Fountain Reach, Alex is perfectly placed among the noted and notorious to figure out why apprentices have been vanishing. But the tournament is a minefield of ancient grudges and new threats, and Alex can't afford to miss a trick as his elusive adversary stays one step ahead in this most dangerous of games.

Great audible book

Gildart does a wonderful job of vocalising Jack's book, looking forward to listening to the next one.

Hooked

What did you like most about Taken?

I like the way that it just drags you into its world, you feel that you are part of Alex's world and become friends with all of his friends and just want to learn more.

If you’ve listened to books by Benedict Jacka before, how does this one compare?

I have previously listened to one prior to this book and will indeed be buying more.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Nothing, his voice perfectly matched these books

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I howled with laughter, these books are full of humour

Any additional comments?

A work in progress, trying to read them all.

Better and better

Mr Jacka’s tales simply get better and better. That’s not an easy task, but so far, he is doing a rather smashing job of it.

For fans of all such UF, such as the wonderful Harry Dresden, at al - if you have not found Alex Verus as yet, you’re missing a real treat! Part of me wishes I had read them years ago, but then I am thoroughly enjoying the Audible versions, and might not have enjoyed the prose form, quite so much? Who knows. I’m hooked, anyway, and have the joy of knowing many more books await me.

On that note, the next book awaits. Gildart is doing a wonderful job, on narration, so I’m very much looking forward to it.

I don’t need a diviner’s skills to know I’m going to enjoy it, just as much as - if not more than - this one!

Continuing the adventures in the other worldly London. The excitement and drama of a reality that we can all imagine vividly due to excellent storytelling and acting

Felt like a plot filler/bridge for the next book.

I read a lot of fantasy and magic novels, so am used to an author using a whole novel to introduce new characters or to set the scene for a more complex narrative to come. This book somehow felt less substantial than other stories; or perhaps I just saw the plot twists coming from too far away. I am being very very picky here, and will still get the next book in the sequence.

English or American? Plaaaastic

The story is ok, its no dresden files but not bad.
The thing that throws me out of the story is the use of American terms by an English author in a book based in England with an English protagonist. His pronunciation of plastic drives me crazy and ruins the narration for me.

Keep getting better!

Really enjoyed this one. With every story you learn more about the characters history and the reasons that make them "who they are"
Great narration and good plot to keep it all together
