Summary

They were known as the Mitford sisters: Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica and Deborah. Born into country-house privilege in the early years of the 20th century, they became prominent as 'bright young things' in the high society of interwar London.

Then, as the shadows crept over 1930s Europe, the stark - and very public - differences in their outlooks came to symbolize the political polarities of a dangerous decade.

Critic reviews

"I was enthralled and charmed by this group biography of all six Mitford sisters, which tells the intertwined stories of their stylish scandalous lives." ( The Bookseller)

Fascinating!

Odd how there is so much tragedy, misunderstanding and sadness even in the lives of these staggeringly beautiful women, whose lives reverberated through the 20th Century.
Although Maggie Mash’s rendition of the book was, mostly very good, her ‘upper class male’ voices were staggeringly annoying!

Beautifully tragic.

A picture of the fall of an aristocratic family. You are lead through the complex lives of a small group who, in a way, represent a whole class.

Ratings should differ if subject is factual.

Very good if the subject interests you. One cannot rate a story which is fact not fiction!

Balanced, well-researched & very well written

What a family! If you thought yours was dysfunctional, listen to this book.
Laura Thompson has given a wonderfully balanced perspective to some of the most interesting and vilified characters of the 20th century. She has dealt kindly & sympathetically with their wayward behaviour without excusing or whitewashing it.
After all, they like us, were humans doing the best they could (most of the time) through the filters of their lives.

Enchanting but tricky storyline

Great narrator but the book itself is a little confusing in what concerns timelines. I believe it would be quite hard to follow for someone who doesn't already have some background knowledge of the family.

A good listen ....

An interesting story of a generation...well told, tidy, ordered and accessible. Nicely read. I think I’ll have a read at some the writings of the sisters next!!!

a classic on the Mitford Girls!

having spent the last 20 years reading all I could find on these marvelous women, who were very much before their time and judged by their peers (who never quite caught them up or got them)! I have to say listening to the book after reading it a few years ago was a real pleasure... it was like revisiting it with a friend... not quite on your own... the reading was first class... cannot fault whatsoever!!

A Particular era

Interesting view of an era now over. The author tries
to give a balanced view of Diana’s inexplicable life choices but appears to be entirely bewitched by her whilst being rather dismissive of Jessica. Jessica’s life as a woman in her own right I am sure was more interesting than the beautiful spouse of a racist and anti semite.

Excellent book

This is a well written book that introduces one to the Mitford ‘girls ‘. Whilst there may be aspects of their characters that could offend, the book manages to hold one’s interest. Extremely entertaining , even if one know about the individual‘s lives. Very well ‘performed’.
