About this listen

Power, Love, Money: Pick One

I’m her father’s best friend. She’s twenty years younger than me. He’ll kill me if I touch her—but I’ll die if I don’t.

The last time I saw Lia Ferreo I was helping her with a skinned knee—and now she wants to run her father’s company. She has no idea the dark lengths her father and I went through to build the mafia-financed hotel empire we currently run, or where any of the bodies are buried, but I know better.

So much better.

Lia’s gentle, I’m cruel.

She’s innocent, I’m a murderer.

She deserves to be free—all I want to do is control her.

And I don’t think I can hold back my beast around her much longer....

Take Her: A Dark Wall Street Mafia Age Gap Romance is like if the movie Secretary met the TV show Succession, with a Beauty and the Beast themed twist. It is the first book in Cassie Alexander's The Moth and the Monster series, and marks her stunning contemporary debut.

Audiobook review: narrated by Matthew Holland and Bunny Warren
4 stars for story / 4.5 stars for performance

For the way this book started, I was surprised by the slow burn it turned into. While it took some time to really get going, the entertainment value the narration brought held my attention through any slow points. In the end, it had me hooked. Lia’s character has moments of immaturity that highlight her youth which I appreciated and emphasized the age gap romance trope. At the same time though, it’s clear she has lived a tough life and I was really rooting for her rather quickly into the book. Rain has such a drastic internal conflict with himself that was well represented by the narrator. So many secrets revealed but it’s obvious there are more to come and I cannot wait for the next book. As an aside, this has one of the best ending lines ever and I am so glad I got to hear it on audio!

I need the next one!

Dark, twisty, taboo? Yes please. This is Cassie Alexander's debut novel? Can't be. It's that good! Meet the emotionally disturbed Lia Ferreo, the daughter of Rhaim's boss and best friend. He didn't know she was the woman he wanted at the club. But now she is in his business world and it has thrown him a bit. His job? Keep her safe and teach her the ropes. But having her clean the toilets truly isn't that. He wants more from her, but he knows the limits. He can read her like a book. When she is scared, panicking, needy and wanting. It's all there. Lia has known what she wants since she was thirteen. Rhaim. And she will do just about anything to get him. But having him as a mentor? This could not be better. Where does this dark, twisty, unpredictable story go? It's packed with family, all striving for power, a somewhat protective father and a deranged, brilliant best friend keeping his daughter safe. But the cliffhanger....it's one that didn't get me upset, as there was a little ending, but so many questions are still up in the air! I cannot wait for the next in this amazing new series!

Matthew Holland, WOW! What a voice put to Rhaim! Commanding, devious, protective, raspy, it's all there creating the exact personality that Rhaim has. Bunny Warren gives voice to Lia, and she is fabulous. From her childhood fears to her passion for Rhaim, she pulls out every emotion and creates and incredible character. These two are a fantastic pairing and I look forward to hearing the next in story.

Take Her is the first book in The Moth and Monster series. This is my first Cassie Alexander book, but definitely not my last. This book has a Mafia/ Dark Wall Street vibe. Lia is coming home expecting to take over her father’s company. Rain is his right hand man and CFO of the company. Rain and Lia have a previous encounter in a S3X club prior to Lia coming home. Rain has a very particular sexual appetite. Lia is absolutely off limits but Rain can’t seem to stay away from her. I was glued to every word along the way. I need the next book immediately. This book ends on a cliffhanger.

Bunny Warren and Matthew Holland did a phenomenal job narrating this book and giving life to these characters. Both are new narrators to me. I will definitely keep an eye out for more books narrated by them.

This was so much more complex than I was expecting. Lia and Rhaim's initial meeting definitely sets a tone but its not the overall tone of the book and this is so much more layered than your usual age gap romance. Although HR would have a field day with these two, the dynamic between Lia and Rhaim simmers away at a slow burn for quite some time before they give in but when the tension finally snaps it snaps big time!

Although the relationship between Lia and Rhaim is the primary focus, the other subplots seamlessly mesh with it. There are some reveals as the book progresses which add dimesion to both the characters and their actions but there is also a villain waiting in the wings and the dread every time they are mentioned is palpable. Bunny Warren excels in some of those scenes; she really conveys the panic Lia is feeling and how she is processing what she knows is inevitably going to happen. Likewise, Matthew Holland is perfect as the authoritative and conflicted Rhaim; his development is really interesting as his resolve is chipped away throughout the story and his backstory makes him more than your usual dark and broody mafia alpha male.

There is a cliffhanger but its very much a natural break rather than a jaw dropper. I cannot wait for Lia to stake her claim and for the confrontation in book two!

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

Since she was a teenager Lia has resided overseas while she finished her education, but she has recently returned home to take part in her father’s business. She has endured a past that no one should have to which not only affected her while she was away but is impacting her return as well. She has had feelings for Rhaim, her father’s friend and employee, for years and she made quite the impression on him even if he did not know who she was at the time.

When Rhaim realizes that Lia is the woman he met the night before he is not happy. He was already displeased that her father wanted him to work with her and this only made the situation more volatile. Even though he attempts to distance himself he is intrigued by her and that only escalates with everything he learns about her.

Both Lia and Rhaim are complex and captivating as the author reveals each twist of the story which leads up to a cliffhanger that leaves us wanting more. Listening to this story the narrators enliven these characters, and you could feel how Rhaim needed to be in control, but he has met his match in Lia as even though she is willing to obedient she also challenges him.

Lia and Rhaim!
