Morgan L. Busse
Kat Bloodmayne is one of the first women chosen to attend the Tower Academy of Sciences. But she carries a secret: she can twist the natural laws of life. She has no idea where this ability came from, only that every time she loses control and unleashes this power, it kills a part of her soul. If she doesn't find a cure soon, her soul will die and she will become something else entirely.
After a devastating personal loss, Stephen Grey leaves the World City Police Force to become a bounty hunter. He believes in justice and will stop at nothing to ensure criminals are caught and locked up. However, when Kat Bloodmayne shows up in his office seeking his help, his world is turned upside down.
Together they search World City and beyond for a doctor who can cure Kat. But what they discover on the way goes beyond science and into the dark sphere of magic.

"Morgan L. Busse takes aim at a new, but just as fantastic subgenre—steampunk!—with book one in The Soul Chronicles... and she hits the bull's-eye! This story will enthrall readers and keep them eager for the next book of The Soul Chronicles series. Highly recommended!" — Serena Chase, USAToday's Happy Ever After (Serena Chase)
"Tainted was an engaging, surprising adventure with a fast paced plot, likeable characters, and intriguing twists... the various mysteries woven through the plot kept me engaged until the very last moment... Tainted is an excellent beginning to what promises to be an exciting and hopefully satisfying new series. If you have never read steampunk before, this is a fabulous place to start." — Radiant Lit
"Tainted is a steampunk fantasy novel that includes complex world-building, three-dimensional characters, and a strong, thoughtful, emotional undercurrent." — Crowned Heart Review, InD'Tale Magazine
"I would say if you are looking for a fun, unforgettable read that will keep you entertained from beginning to end then Tainted is for you! This incredible book gets Five Stars from me!" — RedHeadedBookLover
Once the story unfolds it is full of action, suspense and danger. The plot blends Victorian era steampunk with grave robbing, Frankenstein-esque experiments, strange powers, romance and faith. Being from a Christian author, I was surprised by the references to drunkenness and near-nudity.
Overall, a reasonably gripping story but I would have liked more faith in it.
The narrator gives a solid and clear performance, however there is the odd mispronunciation.
Steampunk merged with Frankenstein
