Summary

New York Times Bestseller

“Catnip for all the TED fans out there.” —Publishers Weekly

“The most insightful book ever written on public speaking…a must-read.” —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals

Since taking over TED in 2001, Chris Anderson has shown how carefully crafted talks can be the key to unlocking empathy, spreading knowledge, and promoting a shared dream. Done right, a talk can electrify a room and transform an audience’s worldview; it can be more powerful than anything in written form.

This “invaluable guide” (Publishers Weekly) explains how the miracle of powerful public speaking is achieved, and equips you to give it your best shot. There is no set formula, but there are tools that can empower any speaker.

Chris Anderson has worked with all the TED speakers who have inspired us the most, and here he shares insights from such favorites as Sir Ken Robinson, Salman Khan, Monica Lewinsky, and more—everything from how to craft your talk’s content to how you can be most effective on stage. This is a must-listen for anyone who is ready to create impact with their ideas.

Good tips and nice anecdoes

My biggest take away from this book is how many of the TED speakers are not naturally charismatic or good speakers, and how TED staff works with them (or sometimes edits them) to deliver the quality of talk that we see online. The book is full of useful tips so you probably want to listen to it with a note pad/app to hand.

Great insight

It seems Chris Anderson, although he owns TED for almost 20 years and is involved with each conference and each speaker, is not one waiting for the accolades. I watched TED talks and TED-ed videos for years without wondering who is the curious mind behind the whole admirable enterprise. Possibly because I didn't expect it be one person.
I found the book well written, clear and insightful.
I re-listened to his book this year (listened to it the first time two years ago), not because I finally had a TED talk to prepare, but because I came across Chris's excellent podcast (The TED Interview) and was reminded of my ownership of it.
Unlike some comments here, I find Chris's voice and narration delightful and I think his passion and curiosity shine through as well as his conviction that ideas are important and so is learning how to get them across in the best possible way.
And I think he's right, we need to learn how to share ideas, know how to spot style over substance and how to connect to each other.

Very useful information

I found a lot of useful information in this audio version and it was well explained. I didn't feel I wanted to listen from end to end as there is no plot but I will dip in and out of it when I need confidence in speaking in public as it's quite inspiring
