About this listen

No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No clues. Eve Dallas may be the best cop in the city - not to mention having the lavish resources of her husband Roarke at her disposal - but the Swisher case has her baffled. The family members were murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. The state-of-the-art security was breached, and the killers used night vision to find their way through the cozy middle-class house. Clearly, Dallas is dealing with pros. The only mistake they made was to overlook the nine-year-old girl cowering in the dark in the kitchen...

Now Nixie Swisher is an orphan - and the sole eyewitness to a seemingly inexplicable crime. Kids are not Dallas' strong suit. But Nixie needs a safe place to stay, and Dallas needs to solve this case. Not only because of the promise she made to Nixie. Not only for the cause of justice. But also to put to rest some of her own darkest memories - and deepest fears. With her partner Peabody on the job, and watching her back - and with Roarke providing the kind of help only he can give - Lieutenant Eve Dallas is running after shadows, and dead-set on finding out who's behind them.

2023 AUDIBLE REVIEW
Enjoyable story but the narrator really does struggle to separate the various voices.
Too many characters sound the same and at one point a character (Master Lu) is supposed to be Asian but sounded Irish.
Ends quite abruptly with no interview with the killers, a pity, and no closure on the black-market baby side of things.
BOOK REVIEW
Another brilliant story in this series.
So many sad deaths in this one, all due to one unbalanced persons personal vendetta.
The fact there were a team of baddies and how it all tied back to a previous book was entertaining.
The gang do their thing and we get another child helped by Eve and Roarke. Loved Nixie, what a strong little girl she is.
We have Roarke doing a lot of remembering in this one, which is a nice change but Eve has her moment too.
I don’t think I have ever seen so many unneeded commas in a book before.
I have read all of these books twice already as I own most in paperback and am slowly collecting the kindle versions too when price is reasonable.
I am rereading this series once more, updating and replacing missing reviews.

Narrator does struggle to separate the voices.

This story gripped me from page one and kept me hooked right to the end. The audio version narrated by Susan Ericsson was brilliant. Her style bringing the characters to life. Well done JD Robb🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Any additional comments?

This book was an interesting look at how Dallas interacts with a child which is in itself funny. I loved the dynamics of the relationships. It was an emotive story having a child at the centre of it. Loved it.

Brill as always

Here I am 20 books down in this series and am yet to be left disappointed. JD Robb just has that knack for consistent storytelling that keeps you reading to the end. Highly recommend to all lovers of Thrillers, High Octane Crime scenes and Full on romance. Praise for Robb 10/10
