Dustin beautifully and thoroughly explores how the question of surrogacy links to wider societal questions; how much control do women legally have over their body? Do we have a right to know our genetic history? How can LGBTQ+ couples shield their children from homophobia?
Dustin explores the personal, scientific, financial and legal aspects of surrogacy. He talks to women who are surrogates, hears the experiences of straight and gay intended parents who have built a family via surrogacy and raises concerns about the current surrogacy laws in the UK. Dustin hears from families in different countries who have had different and difficult processes, and also hears from children born through surrogacy on the right to know their genetic history, always bringing it back to 'why are some people uncomfortable with surrogacy?'.
Lance doesn’t shy away from difficult questions. Instead, he confronts uncomfortable topics head-on, engaging with critics thoughtfully rather than dismissing them. The series explores ethical, legal, and emotional complexities with a genuine effort to understand differing viewpoints and search for real solutions.
He also shares from his own experience with surrogacy, reflecting on becoming a parent to his son Robbie with his husband, Tom Daley. These personal insights add depth and authenticity, grounding the broader debate in lived reality.
