Not the norm
Was not the usual Kinsella light hearted rom com, much more serious. I missed the romance and comedy for the dating of her previous books.

Disappointed
Was really looking forward to listening to this book. But it was drab. Whilst there’s a story, a twist, it was boring. As for the word incredulous, it was so over used. There were funny bits but few and far between sadly.

Struggled
Really disappointed in this as I've enjoyed previous by this author. The story was patchy & poor. I had to force myself to listen to more just to try to get it finished & in the end had to admit defeat. Not good. Narrater was good so that's the silver lining in a very thick cloud.

I really enjoyed it
I love Sophie Kinsellas work and this is a really nice story from a great author, bit slow to start with but a more grown up story than the other books and great characters. Worth listening to.

Surprisingly Good.
Although some of Kinsella’s works have been rather hit and miss in recent years, this is a return to form with a fun and moving story. Well worth a listen.

disappointing
Despite being a fan of Sophie Kinsella since her Shopaholic days I was very disappointed with this book - I also didn't enjoy her last book but thought I'd give this one a chance just in case it was different but sadly it wasn't. Also with this one I found my mind drifting as I was listening and eventually gave up listening half way through chapter four.

Princess yes, king no
A twee but interesting and entertaining story line that does keep your interest in what is going to happen. A couple of good but uncomplicated twists and perhaps a red herring make for the enjoyment . Sophie tells a good tale .

Surprisingly boring for a Kinsella book.
I found this book dull and not the usual humour that a Kinsella book has. wouldn't recommend

Boring
What was most disappointing about Sophie Kinsella’s story?
Much to long seemed to lose the theme of the story and droned on and on
Would you be willing to try another one of Fiona Hardingham’s performances?
Yes
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No
Any additional comments?
Very boring struggled to get to the end.

Not as good as previous books
Slow to start .... incredulous (a word used a lot ) developed into an Ok plot. But you need to plough through 4/5 chapters of just ramblings
Not the best of Sophie’s novels at all

Fun (maybe), but awful
For a story that now and then shoehorns the word "feminism" into the plot and tries so hard to be all about the empowering journey of self-discovery of a strong female character, this is actually the LEAST feminist book I've read (well, listened to) in a while.
Here's the thing: it's not enough to take a classically cliché formula and paint it "feminist". For it to actually BE feminist, you have to redesign the roots of the formula. Surprise Me is entirely about Sylvie being oblivious to the Amazing, Wonderful, Heroic husband she has, and then finding out just how much she should've appreciated him from the start, because he was right all along!
All of Kinsella's leading couples fall into the same tone to be honest - airhead woman x down to earth man - but this was the first one that made me cringe and feel anything BUT feminist. Zero chemistry between Dan and Sylvie, by the way, so I couldn't even go "eh at least it's a nice love story". Overall, I think maybe Sophie does a better job at spreading a feminist message when she's not actively trying to address gender issues. Becky Bloom, with her fucking SHOPPING addiction, is still so much more feminist than Sylvie. God, I'm just very disappointed.

Oops, she did it again
Sophie Kinsella and Fiona Hardingham just compliment each other yet again! I have no words for this novel, it made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me sad and happy and optimistic about life. It made me look into myself and make my revelations too..
thank you Sophie, for yet another beautifully crafted story. Thank you, Fiona, for breathing life into it with your acting.
It was a pleasure listening to this book!

Not a comedy
Sophie Kinsella is known for her RomComs but this definitely wasn’t a comedy. It’s a sweet story though.

My least favourite book from Kinsella
The performance was brilliant, but the story was a little boring. Not what I was expecting.

l liked it but it seemed to never reach the climax
good story and enjoyable and even made me bring up a fun conversation with my husband about the concept of 65 more years of marriage but i felt the story went in a different and less exciting path than it could have

Soooo frustrating!!!
Sophie Kinsella is great but this book was not one of her best efforts. Although humorous at times; the overall impression is that of exasperation with many useless hair splitting details mixed in.
In no way could I empathize with the main heroine Sylvie hard as I tried, she's just not real!! So many unrealistic, long and frustrating conversations that had me at times want to pull my hair out.
I could recommend this story ONLY if the Abridged version is available, and only if you are an avid Sophie Kinsella fan.
