There is something so satisfying about these short novels (Flora's House) - and this one is truly excellent. The actors really embody the characters and it was both a soothing and also uplifting and such a compelling listen. The story, the subjects and themes (an artist, a photographer, looking for secrets and meaning in the natural world - as well as searching for answers to their own inner lives) are brilliantly woven and just so beautifully narrated.
The setting, as with the others in the Flora's House series, is a leading characters in itself - and I am now planning to visit the Outer Hebrides (Isle of Harris)
This is a love story - but so much more. From the beginning and their chance encounter, I was really rooting for Jamie and Liza. But it's a love story, too, of the characters' feelings towards this wild island and what the nature, the weather, the sea, the sands, the skies gives to each of them. Simon Pegg as Jamie is absolutely brilliant - he really brings layered humour, empathy, desire and heart to the character.
The story follows two people whose very different reasons for visiting this beautiful remote island ultimately unite them. They have both found their way there for more than simply a summer holiday. By the end, you feel you know them and because of the exquisite writing and masterful storytelling, you have a vivid and wholly satisfying sense that their story will continue long after we leave them.
