Özet
Clementine Kincaid has thirteen days, one hundred forty miles and one hundred seventy-six horses to save the ranch her husband built. If she delivers the herd to the army post by noon on the last Saturday of October, she can pay the note a powerful man is waiting to call in. If she is a minute late, he gets the spring, the grass and everything else.
Then her ranch hand finds a bay gelding wearing two brands. The top one is hers, burned with her dead husband's iron, the iron that supposedly melted in a bunkhouse fire. Soon there are thirty-one horses like it, all stolen from neighbors, all marked as hers. Whoever is stocking her herd means for the army's inspector to find them at the gate.
So she drives on with a fourteen-year-old son who keeps a tally book, a bowlegged old wrangler who talks to horses, a young horse-breaker whose cousin rides for the enemy, a retired cavalry sergeant who can cook and count, and a stock inspector who may be the one man who can ruin her. Ahead lie a dry white flat, a flooded ford, a rock pass wide enough for one wagon, a hailstorm that turns the herd to thunder, and a sheriff who answers to the wrong master.
The brand has a flaw only her family knows. The answer is somewhere in the herd, and the person who made it may be riding right beside her.
An old-fashioned trail drive with a puzzle at its heart: honest grit, found family and a deadline that will not wait. A historical western adventure.
