Summary

From New York Times best-selling author Lexi Ryan comes a sexy new stand-alone romance about a woman who’d do anything to have a baby and the man who'd do anything to have her.

For my 30th birthday, I'm giving myself the one thing I want most: a baby. Sure, this would be easier if I had a husband - or even a boyfriend - but I refuse to be thwarted by minor details.

When I drunkenly confess my plans to my friends, they convince me to ask Jake Jackson for help. Jake, the best friend who's been there for me through thick and thin. Jake, who also happens to be smart, funny, ridiculously good looking, and the winner of all the genetic lotteries.

So when Jake takes me up on my request - with the stipulation that we get the job done the old-fashioned way - I'd be a fool to decline.

The only problem? I don't know if I can separate sex from all the things I feel for this amazing man. If I can't keep my heart under lock and key, I risk losing the relationship I need the most.

Jake has his own reasons for granting my baby wish. But when I discover his secrets, it could mean the end of us. I have to choose - run or stay and fight for love.

Fall for the boys of Jackson Harbor in Lexi Ryan's sexy new contemporary romance series. These books can all be listened to as stand-alones, but you'll enjoy listening to them as a series!

NOT A FEEL-GOOD ROMANCE

This should’ve been a sweet fell-good friends-to-lovers romance.. but instead I just felt oh so bad - especially for the hero Jake who’d been in love with Ava his best friend for as long as he could remember.. and that was a long long time. We learn he even declared his undying love and devotion the night Ava got engaged to someone else but this self-centred annoying heroine sent him packing. However, her childless marriage failed and an invitation to her ex’s new wife’s baby shower arrives which sets off Ava’s biological clock and longing.. so now she’s going to use Jake as a sperm donor to make her dreams come true. This starts off an emotional and heart-achingly difficult push ‘n pull for Jake as he’s gambling his heart to win Ava.. but all of Ava’s past relationship insecurities (which are many) are brought to life and Jake has to first demolish every one of her demons. But Ava isn’t the only one with demons of the past.. because a flesh and blood demon is going to stir-up trouble and cause waves just as their HEA horizon is in sight.

Worth a credit? No, not for me. It’s narrated well and Ava’s closed-off feelings towards Jake are eventually clarified.. but it’s too little too late as there were several times I just wanted to stop this annoying feel-bad dual POV story that unfortunately didn’t bring out the best of me. Because my heart broke again and again for Jake, my anger rose over their drawn-out undeclared feelings, my temper flared wishing someone would please knock some sense into them, I prayed for patience.. or that they’d just talk to each other.. and, as the predicted angst played out threatening their HEA ending, I cringed at the drama that followed. I usually like Lexi Ryan’s books.. but sadly I’ll be returning this one because it hurt too much.

Jackson Harbor is one steamy city

Jake and Ava have intense chemistry and it’s incredibly fun to read. This is an angsty friends to lovers you won’t regret.

The narration is easy to listen to.

The hurdles for best friends to lovers

Jackson and Ava have been best friends since grade school. They’ve been through lots of trials together...including her divorce. Now Ava’s biological clock is ticking and she wants to go to a sperm bank...that is until Jake agrees to be her sperm donor but the old fashioned way. Jake has loved Ava forever and is using this opportunity to make her see the truth. But there are secrets that can destroy their friendship...what will Ava do?
As I’ve said before, I love this series, however, I was having a difficult time liking Ava. Ava was too insecure and selfish for a 30yo. That said, glad that she and Jake got their HEA.

LOVED Jake, struggled with Ava!!!

So my headline really says it all... I loved the idea of this story and most of the characters in it. Jake was completely charming and I could not get enough of him. He was the best friend to Ava but he was totally in love with her and wanted her so badly... even enough to give her a baby. My issues were really with a bit too much IMO. I love me an angsty, friends to lovers story! This just seemed a bit heavier in the angst department than was necessary.

Strait Up Love has the same narrators as the first audiobook and they did another fabulous job. Summer Roberts has sweet and soft southern voice. Tyler Donne is also a delightful narrator. They certainly play the southern characters very well!!

My Thoughts on Straight Up Love

I feel as though I spent most of this book torn between which of the main characters I felt worse for. There ended up being a little more angst to the story then I was expecting, and yet it was a book I could easily pick back up when life forced me to tear myself away. I personally ended up being a huge fan of Jake. Even in his mistakes he ultimately put the person he loved first. There were moments when I'll admit I was frustrated and wanted to throw my kindle. Jake was the kind of guy who deserves to be fought for. Not enough of that happened for my liking. And still this story had me riveted. Just goes to show what a good author Lexi Ryan is.

There was one secondary character that really had me intrigued by the end of the book. I need the next one to be here already.

The narrators for the audiobook did a great job. I liked both their voices and feel like they did a good job with all the different characters as well as showing the necessary emotion. I would absolutely enjoy listening to them again.

Friends to Lovers, a bit too much angst

Ava and Jake had been friends for a long time. Jake has been in love with Ava for a long time but Ava didn't see it or feel it. To be honest, given there were instances when Ava's thinking demonstrated absolutely no interest in Jake as a romantic partner, it really didn't feel realistic that she changed. But still, she went back and forth regarding her interest in him. Her low self esteem (due to daddy issues) also played a role in this waffling. Anyway, the story was that she wants a baby and she asked if Jake would consider being her baby daddy because he's her best friend. He agrees only if they do it naturally and he's hoping that makes her realize they are perfect for each other. Can he get over her barriers?

There are a lot of psychological issues here- her daddy issues, her jealousy of her "perfect sister", her low self esteem, her desperation for a baby and her inability to see Jake as more than a best friend. Together, I felt like there's a bit too much forced angst. That said, I felt bad for her and hoped that she would be able to resolve all her issues to get her HEA with Jake.

The narrators are good- they were the same narrators for the first book and they did good with pacing and character representation. I enjoyed their interpretation of the story and the characters.

Listening and can’t stop

I love this series and I soooooo want to hear the other audiobooks.....
There’s some intriguing stories in this world the author created. Ava and Jake’s story is so exiting and they have a long and tangled past. Can they find their way through....

No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings
Lots of good dialogues
Characters is familiar and developed in to realistic personalities that I feel like I know so well. Secondary characters has me curious about their stories, I really hope to hear Molly,s story...
Chemistry is unmistakable between Ava and Jake and the intensity when they finally take the step is sizzling hot.

I love this world the author created.

Fantastic Story & Narration🎧 More Jackson💘Love💘

Lexi Ryan pens another awesome “Boys of Jackson Harbor” novel. I am loving this series, the books are well written with interesting storylines that are captivating from start to end. This is Jake and Ava’s story and the time line picks up after the 1st book ended. Jake Jackson and Ava have been best friends forever, both harbor deeper feelings but are afraid to act on them because they do not want to jeopardize their friendship. Jake runs Jackson’s Brews, he loves to cook and create different types of ale. In addition to her teaching job and running the theater club Ava works a few nights at the bar too. She enjoys spending time with Jake. When Ava comes up with a plan to have a baby her friends convince her to ask Jake for his sperm instead of going to the sperm bank. Jake comes up with his own proposition. This is a great friends to lovers romance, it is well plotted with plenty of drama, angst, some twists and a whole lot of emotions leading up to a great romance. Lexi Ryan, thank you for another great story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

I listened to the Audible edition, narrated by the talented Sumer Roberts and Tyler Donne. They are versatile voice artists who continue to bring these character to life, giving each their own voice and personality. You could hear how much heart they put into their work as they capture and project the characters emotions into their performance. They are entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen🎧

Awesome!! Even Better Than Book 1!!

#AudiobookObsession

Different couple in the series, but even better than the first one IMHO!! I love how Ms. Roberts and Mr. Donne bring these awesome characters to life. The scope of the emotions can really be felt and it felt like I was a part of the story. I think the only thing wrong is the length of the story. I wanted it to be longer lol!!!!
