Summary

A wryly funny and moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye.

Teen idol at 15, international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at 20, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences as a painfully misunderstood child actor in Ohio uprooted to the wild counterculture of mid-1970s Malibu, where he embarked on his unrelenting pursuit of a career in Hollywood.

The Outsiders placed Lowe at the birth of the modern youth movement in the entertainment industry. During his time on The West Wing, he witnessed the surreal nexus of show business and politics, both on the set and in the actual White House. And in between are deft and humorous stories of the wild excesses that marked the 80s, leading to his quest for family and sobriety.

Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last 25 years. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.

An easy listen

Interesting insight into a world so different to my own. Lowe's narration adds to sense of personal sharing. Not a whole lot of soul bared, but enough to give some understanding of the man/ his achievements, and have to admit, have made me really like him. (Jury was out previously - too good looking to be likeable?) I found his recount of his involvement with the West Wing interesting....

An easy listen - helps a few commuting hours fly by.

For the fans only

Well read by the author.

Deals more with the early part of his career and skims over the more scintillating details. But very enjoyable none the less.

Heartfelt and open

I loved learning about one of my favourite actors and hearing about his childhood which was so different to how I imagined.
Listening to Rob tell the story was a huge plus as often I don’t like the narrators voices and just prefer to read the book myself.
I can’t imagine anyone that likes Rob Lowe not loving this book - I hope he does another one soon where this one left off.
Full of names you wouldn’t even know he had come across in his career - an interesting life - just seems like a really nice guy too. Loved it!

Absolutely brilliant

Was a kinda fan of Rob Lowe, never really knowing of him, or his body of work. After reading this audio book, that has all changed.
A lovely man, with a huge talent, telling of a crazy industry. His passion boundless and endearing.

Fun, insightful but no real gossip.

Any additional comments?

Rob describes his long climb to showbiz success in a highly descriptive fashion, this is very welcome particularly as he begins to breakthrough and we meet the "bratpack". There are some nice stories and i particularly enjoyed the depth of the background tales giving us detail on casting, off set and on set. As you would excpect the narration by the subject is faultless and indeed this is one of the cases where its perfectly read. I personally didnt know that much about Rob Lowe before but i feel i really do now, the great aspect is the introduction of so many other people in his story. Michael j Fox , estevez, Sheens etc, i now want to go and find there books to piece it all together.Really great story, if you like movies this will impress you.

Really interesting story, but......

I loved hearing about Rob Lowes life in the movies and how he came to get there. But, it was a little too "poor me" - I actually started to feel guilty about liking him as an actor. Cheer up Rob, you had fantastic opportunities, that people can only dream of !!!!

A great listen for every Rob Lowe fan

really enjoyed hearing Rob tell his own story, sharing the high points and not shying away from the low points. shame it stopped where it did, I'd have happily listened to 10 more years of his stories.

Love Rob Lowe

Would you consider the audio edition of Stories I Only Tell My Friends to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version so couldn't comment but I really liked how the author narrated the story. Rob Lowe does a great job. It is very easy to listen to his voice!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I really enjoyed the scenes when he describes working on the film 'The Outsiders' and his time on the West Wing.

A fanciful Hollywood existence relatably retold

Rob Lowe is a lot tougher than I’d ever have thought. Not that I would ever have thought about how tough Rob Lowe is. This is the thing about Rob Lowe, I’ve never found myself particularly thinking that much about him. Having listened to this book I now think he’s awesome. He’s had crazy ups and downs, was mates with Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen when he was in high school. Pretty much always wanted to be an actor and has hobnobbed with some of the most powerful and famous people on earth. It’s a wild mix, and the stories are funny, the protagonist smart and the tales are brilliantly delivered.
Found myself pleasantly confronted in a charming convergence between thinking of Lowe as a ridiculously handsome, talented man, but also someone who's imminently fallible. He isn't as confident as you'd think. He's worked much harder than I imagined. And he's had some really tough breaks and major disappointments along the way. It's a good book.
