Summary

Da una conchiglia che un bambino raccoglie su una spiaggia cilena, a sud, molto a sud del mondo, una voce si leva, carica di memorie e di saggezza. È la voce della balena bianca, l'animale mitico che per decenni ha presidiato le acque che separano la costa da un'isola sacra per la gente nativa di quel luogo, la Gente del Mare.

Il capodoglio color della luna, la creatura più grande di tutto l'oceano, ha conosciuto l'immensa solitudine e l'immensa profondità degli abissi, e ha dedicato la sua vita a svolgere con fedeltà il compito che gli è stato affidato da un capodoglio più anziano: un compito misterioso e cruciale, frutto di un patto che lega da tempo immemore le balene e la Gente del Mare.

Per onorarlo, la grande balena bianca ha dovuto proteggere quel tratto di mare da altri uomini, i forestieri che con le loro navi vengono a portare via ogni cosa anche senza averne bisogno, senza riconoscenza e senza rispetto. Sono stati loro, i balenieri, a raccontare finora la storia della temutissima balena bianca, ma è venuto il momento che sia lei a prendere la parola e a far giungere fino a noi la sua voce antica come l'idioma del mare.
