Detailed breakdown history of Stoicism

This book goes through a detailed breakdown history of Stoicism, which if you are curious is an ancient greek teaching that values having knowledge and enduring pain and hardships with harmony. This philosophy resembles Taoism, but they both have been derived out of different cultures, so if you know the teaching of Taoism, then you may be interested in reading this to compare and contrast.

Accessible way to practice

This book interprets stoicism from the Classical Greek and Roman sources in a way that's accessible to practice for modern listeners- in much the same way that it explains that the Romans interpreted Stoicism and developed it in light of their own needs when they picked it up from the Greeks.

Great Stoic practices and exercises

This is an excellent book on the basics of Stoic philosophy, with an emphasis on Stoic practices and exercises. It could be listen straight through (this is what I did), but it could easily be used a reference because the structure of the book is so strictly outlined and divided into sections according to the outline. The content was clear and concise, and a listeners with little or no previous philosophical knowledge should be able to understand it. This book was really indispensable for a new Stoic like me.

mixture of self-help and stoicism

Good book if you need to become more disciplined or successful but I don't think stoicism has anything to do with worldly success. In contrast, "The Daily Stoic" by Holiday keeps true to the roots of stoicism. Hudson's interpretation is not a bad thing, it is just not stoicism which is based on pure, timeless principles regardless of your circumstance.

For example, I never heard Epictetus, Seneca, or Marcus Aurelius talk about worldly success whereas Hudson implies that worldly success will surely follow. Perhaps if you follow the author's principles, but what will you lose in the process? True freedom.

There is a lot of repetition as well (several hours it seems). Book 2 seems to mostly repeat Book 1.

Buy it now!

It's a fantastic book with simple, yet powerful descriptions of the most important Stoic assumptions. Great guide for both those not very familiar with the philosophy, but also those, that maybe have listen a lot about it but still need some sort of structuring of the knowledge gained. It's easily worth 10 times the price. Buy it now!

Awesome!

Stoicism gives us power over the thought process and allows us to become resilient enough to face the hardships of life. It can also save a soul from chaos. It is simply about endurance and our capability for patience as well as controlling negative emotions.

Good listen!

Very good concise yet comprehensive examination of stoicism. Although the section on logic and constructing syllogisms is a bit of a slog, the sections “On Control” and “Virtue I’m Stoicism” are excellent. A worthy addition to the published works on the subject.

Clear and concise

Great information. Clear and concise. Every sentence is a truth in itself. The root of most self-help books come out of these concepts and it feels a little bit extra "cool" because of the history.
