Definitely worth listening

I wanted to freshen up a bit on my philosophy class that I had in college and this book did the trick. I can say that it was more useful than the course as we had never talked about implementing ancient way of thinking in modern society as this is something different than that whole story about Athens and democracy

Practical information

As a very emotional and vocal person, learning about Stoicism was kind of eye-opening for me. It’s fascinating how the philosophy stresses indifference, and at the same time teaches you the importance of keeping mindful of your surroundings. Interesting paradox. I’m quite pleased that I learned a Stoic practice or two that I can apply in my daily life from the author.

Excellent listen

But this book gives a detailed explanation on everything revolving around stoicism. Through easy, detailed paragraphs, the authors breaks down the study of stoicism how it applies to our life, and the history of the subject and how ancient philosophers studied it.

Truly wonderful book.

This book is so well written and so full of information about the early stoics and the major themes of stoicism. Has a great deal of information other books on stoicism don't have. Not much to add to the other great reviews.

One the best self-help books I've read

Garry Hudson explains why he feels that Stoicism is something that has not only survived, but flourished and been reborn with supporting evidence from the words of other philosophers. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in expanding their philosophical horizons in an easy to understand format.

Such an excellent book!

Going into this book, I didn't really know what to expect. I was unfamiliar with what exactly stoicism is and wasn't really sure how much it was going to interest me. However, not only did I get an in depth look at a new--and rather interesting--philosophical study, but I also was able to see how it connects to every day life.

mixture of self-help and stoicism

Good book if you need to become more disciplined or successful but I don't think stoicism has anything to do with worldly success. In contrast, "The Daily Stoic" by Holiday keeps true to the roots of stoicism. Hudson's interpretation is not a bad thing, it is just not stoicism which is based on pure, timeless principles regardless of your circumstance.

For example, I never heard Epictetus, Seneca, or Marcus Aurelius talk about worldly success whereas Hudson implies that worldly success will surely follow. Perhaps if you follow the author's principles, but what will you lose in the process? True freedom.

There is a lot of repetition as well (several hours it seems). Book 2 seems to mostly repeat Book 1.

Well Done!

This book discussed very well about the history of stoicism. Most of the information here are amazing because I never read them before. I learned what the core philosophies are. I also learned what the cardinal virtues are. This book taught me what stoicism helps me with. I hope that this book is created before because I really like the content of this book. One thing I am looking about this book is good examples in each topic.

Such an excellent book!

I discovered the principles of stoic life just recently, after my friend told me about stoicism and how beneficial its fundamentals can be when applied to our life. I wanted to learn more and I guess this set of 3 books satisfied all of my interests. and I can say stoic life definitely merits a try, at least some of its key principles I will welcome in my life for sure.

Well written, difficult subject but reasonable to understand for a lay-person.
A Complete Guide to Stoicism does an excellent job of explaining the philosophy and history of Stoicism.

Inspiring and enlightening...

It is inspiring to know what the ancient people went thru and how they were able to triumph over life's challenges and trials. It is also awesome to read on the philosophies that these people believed in and how they control things in order to get the outcome they desired.

Eye (ear?) Opening!

There were quite a few typos and some awkward choices of words, but overall the author managed to convey meaning.
Some readers can be off put by the author's presentation of stoicism as a religion rather than purely as a philosophy. The approach, however, makes sense given the Ancient Greeks and Romans, who created and developed stoicism and many other philosophies, saw little distinction between the two. Classic stoicism especially includes a few tenants which could be considered religious.
Overall, this is a good introduction to a very admirable philosophy and lifestyle.

I needed this book

The author did a good job developing a breakdown of the core aspects of stoicism, making the philosophy approachable and easy to understand for a layman. The classic stoic texts can be difficult for modern readers to grasp.

Awesome bundle

The listen will learn about the history of Stoicism, the differences between good and evil, vice and virtue, and positive and negative influences. Practical logic and reason will be applied. What is also very interesting is that Garry Hudson even addresses how Stoicism influences behavioral psychology today. This is a great book for anyone who is interested in the subject.
