THE TIMES AUDIOBOOK OF THE WEEK

The bodies never stay buried forever . . .'

On a freezing winter morning, fishermen pull a body from the sea. It is quickly discovered that the dead man was the prime suspect in a decade-old investigation, when a prominent civil servant disappeared without trace. DCI Karen Pirie was the last detective to review the file and is drawn into a sinister world of betrayal and dark secrets.

But Karen is already grappling with another case, one with even more questions and fewer answers. A skeleton has been discovered in an abandoned campervan and all clues point to a killer who never faced justice - a killer who is still out there.

In her search for the truth, Karen uncovers a network of lies that has gone unchallenged for years. But lies and secrets can turn deadly when someone is determined to keep them hidden for good . . .

The number one bestseller and unrivalled queen of crime Val McDermid is back with her most exhilarating, breath-taking thriller yet.

Story is fine as usual with this series but I find the narration a bit off putting. The reader makes all the Scottish men sound like they’re about to burst in to laughter or in the case of the main characters sidekick, make him sound like a dumb schoolboy. The female characters then mostly come across as smug or superior, which again is mostly due the the tone of the narration as opposed to the actual text. I still listen to them though but if the narrator could adjust her tone of reading I think the experience would be a lot better.

Narration is a bit off putting.

I've read a lot of Val Mcdermid over the years. The standard has always been high, but this book is one of her very best. Also, great to see her increasingly bringing some political commentary into the narrative at the margins.

One of the best she's ever written

A complex plot as one would expect from this author with the leading DS Karen Pirie breaking rules but getting the job done . Driving at 110 mph even with flashing lights whilst intelligently discussing a separate case strained credulity as did her skills in tracking down her injured wingman. The first lockdown and preparation suggests the background of the next book eagerly awaited.

A gripping story with up to date background
