Story
A mutating plague is spreading. It's killing two of every three people on Earth. And Mike Crenshaw is totally unprepared. From the world of The Traveler Series comes a new cast of characters, new obstacles, and the same devastating, world-altering virus which plunges society into the depth of a dystopian hell. Unprepared begins in the hours before The Scourge takes hold. As if ripped from today's headlines, governments react too slowly and the disease spreads too fast. Quarantines don't work. Infrastructure fails. People die.

Summary
How long would you last?
It's been two weeks since the EMP. Getting out was just the beginning. Staying alive is proving harder than anyone could have imagined. Max knows people will come from the cities. He knows they'll be ready to fight, to do whatever it takes to ensure their own survival. Will he be able to lead the others in the defense of the farmhouse, even when he's still recovering from his injuries? Georgia is in charge of hunting. Each trip into the woods brings her closer to danger. It's just a matter of time before she runs into people who will do anything to get her gun and her gear. How dangerous do things have to get before she stops trying to provide for her kids? John is Max's estranged brother. He'd always made fun of Max for worrying about being prepared. Now, he's trapped in his upscale apartment with no gear and no food. He's wishing he was more like his brother. Does he want to have what it takes to try to get out of the city?

EMP apocalypse done incredibly well...
One week after starting the series I'm already onto book 4. On the one hand this is because it's well written, well balanced, character driven storytelling and it's got me totally hooked. On the other hand it's also because the books are relatively short and I'm getting through the audible credits at a rate of knots. That said, if you're a fan of the genre, or you just like I high tempo thriller with a tinge of terrifying realism, don't pass this book (or series) up, or you'll be missing out. The author obviously knows his craft and I'll be checking out his other work when I finish the 8 books in this series...
The series is also read by the best post-apoc narrator I'm aware of. It's a winning formula and I highly recommend you get stuck in.

Confiscation ideology issues are a constant theme.
This being the 2nd in the series, I was hoping morality would make a strong showing. I was wrong. Whenever there is a perceived need, that is justification enough to wantonly take from others.
It belies the premise of humanity & jumped straight into animalistic behavior from the first day in the first book. It was never explained away. Never made to reason. Just a dog eat dog mindset with platitudes and "many miles before I sleep".
Should that not be a concern, the rest of the book & the writing therein is a bit addictive. Be it not for waiting for a come to Jesus moment or a severe humbling. There is too much rampant "man's inhumanity to man" emanating from the main characters and it undermines the storyline.

okay story, improbable actions by the characters
Not sure if the author lacks imagination or tactical common sense, or if he's just trying to create the stupidest moronic but luckiest characters in the world.
You're traveling down the road, being followed by bad guys who you are certain are wanting to do you harm. My very first thought is no problem make a turn off, stopping the road, lift the hood and pretend to be having car troubles. For people with rifles get in the woods on each side of the roadway and ambushed the bad guys when they stop. Easy peasy too bad guys down, very little risk to the good guys and gals. How could this not have even been brought up as a suggestion by the characters? So then the two characters with their convoluted silly logic decide the only way to go is a standoff. Why would Georgia wait until the fight between the two men is over to take out the other bad guy? She should have shot the other guy as soon as the two preparing to hand and fight had set their guns down.
These people as I said are either the stupidest yet luckiest people in the world as portrayed by the author, or the author just isn't very realistic and how people would act. Not sure if I'll be able to listen to another one of these books by this author, I can only bang my head against my steering wheel and scream stupid stupid stupid so many times before I get brain damage. Hmmm, note to author, pad your steering wheel.

Once again,
It’s a decent story but the timeline just doesn’t work for me. People getting way too used to seeing dead bodies the travel and if I’m correct in the two books it’s only been three weeks? Way too much way too soon. Keep trying

One of Best EMP Survival Series
Ryan Westfield's EMP Survival series is one of the best in PA fiction. Well it's only part fiction. If today is any indication, this kind of reality is all but a potential certainty. The characters of Max, Mandy, Georgia, John, Chad, and the others is thrilling and frightening. The farmhouse was at first a haven, but soon is crawling with outsiders hellbent on survival at all costs. This forces the core group to flee, while trying to keep their humanity in check.
Kevin Pierce brings his signature richness to the work. Brilliant as always, he never misses a chance to mesmerize readers.

book 2 even better way better than book 1
I was on the edge of my seat I really wish they would do more of the story about John. that was the most exciting story even more than a Max Mandy Georgia Chad I just found this story about John and the woman who lost her husband and she is now joined him on the journey John was already taking a loan. I think there are a great team and I love their story John's story should be a book all by itself. I can't stand it to go back and forth every other chapter each of character. they should have their own story and there own book they should put all the max stories in one book all the chad stories in one book all the John stories in one book and each of them have their own book series of the same event from their eyes and their point of view. anyway other than that great audiobook check it out God bless you all. May the peace of Lord Jesus be with everyone God Bless You All
