Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

You don’t get biceps like Briggs by giving up when the going gets tough....

CrossFit superstar Sam Briggs, a.k.a. ‘The Engine’, is a true hero in the sport, with a level of endurance unparalleled in the game. This is the story of how she got to the top and battled with everything she had to stay there.

Sam’s memoir takes in the whole story, from being kicked out of ballet lessons as a child but being accepted on the boys’ sports teams, to working as a firefighter in West Yorkshire for 10 years, tackling dangerous and adrenaline-fueled situations on a daily basis and to taking up CrossFit at the comparatively ancient age of 27. Sam tells of what it took to become champion a mere three years later and after a year out with a broken patella. Despite the numerous setbacks and debilitating injuries that have plagued her in the years that followed, when most other athletes would have thrown in the towel, Sam has fought and continues to fight, to be the very best that she can be.

Start Your Engines is the story of how, with a combination of grit, training and dogged motivation, it’s never too late to achieve your dreams.

great book, but as an audiobook it just doesn't work. the narrator is not right for the story at all.

Great story but so disappointed

As a CrossFitter I was eagerly waiting for his book but I had to give up after 10 mins then Narrator is just not good and her accent is just not right for this book. Just buy the book and don’t spend your credit on this

Was so excited and was so dissapointed

i'm a crossfitter and couldn't wait for this to come out, had it pre ordered and started it soon as it came out, but had to turn it off 10 minutes later, THE NARRATOR IS TERRIBLE! Could barely understand her and her voice was like nails on a chalkboard, im sure the story is great so will be buying the hardback!

Inspiring story. Enthralling narration

As a crossfitter, I loved this. The details she goes into of different events are great. It’s a really in-depth look at crossfit. I would have liked a bit more detail about her personal life as I like an autobiography to really get under the skin of the author, but I did love it. The narrator is SUPERB! She’s obviously a northerner, just like Sam, and she reads in a really charming conversational style. Like having Sam Briggs pop round for a chat!

Very enjoyable (with good narration)

Very enjoyable book with lots of insights into the mind and life of a high level Crossfitter.

I was put off by some of the reviews that slated the narrator but I gave it a go anyway as I have an interest in Crossfit. I have to admit that after being so used to American or neutral accents reading books that this narrator seemed strange to listen to at first. But knowing what Sam Briggs sounds like I thought it's not too dissimilar to her accent so I've stuck with the book. And I'm glad that I did, its an excellent book so far and I found myself quickly getting used to listening to the narrators northern twangs

So give it a go you won't be disappointed....It's the best Crossfit related book I have listened to so far!

Dreadful Narration

Content was good but completely ruined by a dreadful narrator with, what sounded like, an awful, put on accent. Completely ruined the book for me.

Wish I’d read the hard copy

Incredible competitor and a great insight into her life but very difficult to listen to on account of the narrators voice. Couldn’t sound less like an inspiring CrossFit champion. I don’t mind the accent but the pitch and tone were so wrong.

Loved it

Always nice to see a book by an athlete from your own country, and for me I liked the narrator and her quirky accent, sort of sounded like jane horrocks(think that's how it's spelt lol)

Insightful and inspiring

Sam Briggs is a legend. This book encapsulates her story, inspires those of us who come from the same path and those who enjoy CrossFit. Would highly recommend. I’m a northerner and I am used to the narrators accent. Though it is the only downside to this audiobook. It is over the top, but I did get used to it and she is very good. The story shines through. I would recommend listening to this book if you love sport, sport Pyschology and or CrossFit.

Inspiring liste

Loved Sam Briggs story and also how she kept her British audience at the forefront. Would have been all too easy to target the Americans given the CrossFit bias towards that audience. Unfortunately there was some issues with the audio at times. It seemed there were sections where the audio overlapped.

A Tale of CrossFit Roots and Mentality

Good luck putting this one down. This is a must read for fans of mental toughness, athletics, CrossFit history, and good ol' humor.
Sam Briggs is one of the sports all time greats for a multitude of reasons; and they're all captured in this autobiographical sketch of her life and time as a professional athlete (so far). True fans and followers of Sam will hear her personable prose as she opens up about the lesser known aspects of her early life before finding CrossFit, as well as her personal experience across a prestigious CrossFit career.

Great Listen

Great story and listen of the development of Ms. Briggs Crossfit career. I was hooked and finished in a few days. Recommend to any Crossfit attending athlete that can appreciate the work and effort shared in her story.
