There is a new revolution happening in sports as more and more athletes are basing their success on this game-changing combination: health, nutrition, training, recovery, and mindset. Unfortunately, the evidence-based techniques that the expert PhDs, academic institutions, and professional performance staffs follow can be in stark contrast to what many athletes actually practice. When combined with the noise of social media, old-school traditions, and bro-science, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction.

7 hours you’ll never get back!!

Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
You don’t get biceps like Briggs by giving up when the going gets tough....
CrossFit superstar Sam Briggs, a.k.a. ‘The Engine’, is a true hero in the sport, with a level of endurance unparalleled in the game. This is the story of how she got to the top and battled with everything she had to stay there.
Sam’s memoir takes in the whole story, from being kicked out of ballet lessons as a child but being accepted on the boys’ sports teams, to working as a firefighter in West Yorkshire for 10 years, tackling dangerous and adrenaline-fueled situations on a daily basis and to taking up CrossFit at the comparatively ancient age of 27. Sam tells of what it took to become champion a mere three years later and after a year out with a broken patella. Despite the numerous setbacks and debilitating injuries that have plagued her in the years that followed, when most other athletes would have thrown in the towel, Sam has fought and continues to fight, to be the very best that she can be.
Start Your Engines is the story of how, with a combination of grit, training and dogged motivation, it’s never too late to achieve your dreams.

i'm a crossfitter and couldn't wait for this to come out, had it pre ordered and started it soon as it came out, but had to turn it off 10 minutes later, THE NARRATOR IS TERRIBLE! Inspiring story. Enthralling narration
As a crossfitter, I loved this. The details she goes into of different events are great. It’s a really in-depth look at crossfit. I would have liked a bit more detail about her personal life as I like an autobiography to really get under the skin of the author, but I did love it. The narrator is SUPERB! She’s obviously a northerner, just like Sam, and she reads in a really charming conversational style. Like having Sam Briggs pop round for a chat!

Very enjoyable (with good narration)
Very enjoyable book with lots of insights into the mind and life of a high level Crossfitter. I was put off by some of the reviews that slated the narrator but I gave it a go anyway as I have an interest in Crossfit. I have to admit that after being so used to American or neutral accents reading books that this narrator seemed strange to listen to at first. But knowing what Sam Briggs sounds like I thought it's not too dissimilar to her accent so I've stuck with the book. And I'm glad that I did, its an excellent book so far and I found myself quickly getting used to listening to the narrators northern twangs So give it a go you won't be disappointed....It's the best Crossfit related book I have listened to so far!

Please change the narrator
The narrator is like a really bad children’s story reader - this is a book I would have really enjoyed listening to but only managed 10mins before giving up. I live up north so used to the accent but this really grated on me - I’m sure your overseas fans will find this 10x more annoying. A reader with more universal accent would be far better. Will have to read it instead. What a shame though!

Brilliant
Okay so the actual book is brilliant but the narrator is well not so good! I travel a lot hence why I got the audiobook and not the book so I just sort of got used to it after a while but it’s like listening to that little chicken from Chicken Run talk, who sits knitting and says things like “I don’t wanna be a pie I don’t like gravy” Anyway that aside the book is amazing! Such a great insight in to Sam’s life and journey as a Crossfitter! I absolutely loved it!

Good book/ bad narration
I almost gave up listening, not because the book was lacking, but because the narrators voice was very hard to listen to. The accent wasn’t the main problem, but the nasal quality and cadence of speech. I enjoyed the book itself, but if you have the option, just read it instead.

Recommending against this
I’d only read this book if you are already really into Sam Briggs and want to read an autobiography to learn more about her. This book is not motivating, it is not inspiring, it has no rise climate plot twist etc. It is essentially a 10 hour list of her achievements in life sprinkled with injury.

Great story, totally wrong choice of narrator
This was a really great listen for any keen CrossFitter and it was so interesting to hear the previously unknown parts of Sam Briggs’ amazing story. Unfortunately, the narrator wasn’t really an appropriate choice. First, she sounded like a little old lady, which meant her first person narration of the incredible sporting feats that Sam Briggs has achieved sounded a bit comical. Secondly, I don’t think she’s a CrossFit buff because she didn’t really get the emphasis right in a few parts. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this audio book and would recommend it.

A Tale of CrossFit Roots and Mentality
Good luck putting this one down. This is a must read for fans of mental toughness, athletics, CrossFit history, and good ol' humor. Sam Briggs is one of the sports all time greats for a multitude of reasons; and they're all captured in this autobiographical sketch of her life and time as a professional athlete (so far). True fans and followers of Sam will hear her personable prose as she opens up about the lesser known aspects of her early life before finding CrossFit, as well as her personal experience across a prestigious CrossFit career.
