Summary

All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumours of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them.

Spensa is sure there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars - and it was terrifying. What she learned turned her world upside down. Everything Spensa's been taught is a lie.

But Spensa also learned a few things about herself - and she'll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to.

Safe 2nd instalment

This is definitely in the Sanderson Young Adult category. The writing is good, but not quite his exceptional world-building standard. It's a good second instalment, and you can see plot starting to grow (although this time, I guessed the plot twist!). It's a steady, fun sci-fi story - but not earth-shatteringly brilliant. Still, if you're a Sanderson fan, then this won't disappoint you (but I'm not giving my usual 5-star-devotee plug).

Not sure why, but it's boring.

I love Sanderson novels I've got loads of them and always look forward to a new one. Unfortunately for some reason I'm finding Starsight a bit of a slog. I like that we're peeling back the layers of the Human/Superiority mystery but we're doing so really slowly, and the intrigue is just a bit boring. The action feels distant and disconnected without much at stake so it doesn't pep the rest up really. Spin is still an interesting character, you can feel the misguided paranoia washing off her and of course the interplay between her and the ship is great, but the other characters are kind of meh so far.

Great book, and excellent voice actor

After the first book, I had big expectations for starsight. As usual, Sanderson does not disappoint. great story, twists and mysteries you won't see coming, and great characters. The voice actor was perfect, really brought the characters to life.

Amazing

I absolutely loved it. A great sequel to a great sci-fi story. I'd definitely recommend it! I hope they one day turn this books into films!

A good book, but not as gripping as the first.

This book is a solid addition to the series, though I saw the first plot twist coming miles away. There is also one charecter who is extremely annoying, but the story managed to pull through either way. I enjoyed it, but not as much as the first one. Great narrator.

Great story, not as great production.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The production value was a bit off sometimes however.

Need more ASAP!

First book had me gripped from the start, wanting to know more. I fell in love with Spensa, her bloodthirsty, warrior personality was endearing and her pet doomslug it's typical of her to pick a name like that! MBot was hilarious! The chemistry between Spensa and MBot were some of the most memorable moments in this story. The second book however was very disappointing, what went from a suspenseful action packed first installment went slow and somewhat boring to follow. I found myself on many occasions wishing for the Spy mission to hurry up and end so we could get back to the survival of the human race. I was also questioning why Spensa was training enemy forces and thought that was a really bad idea!! I get that this was a small part in a grand story so I'm willing to forgive the second book on the condition that the upcoming books are worth the wait. The narrator, did an amazing job defining the characters even though the 'my my' was ultra cringe! All in all, I enjoyed this and really looking forward to the continuation.

I knew it, I knew it

And it was still very satisfying to hear “the secret” I love this book, very entertaining and also helps putting things in perspective about how we think of people who are different to us. I don’t know why M-Bot has a Scottish accent but I like it.

Kind of ok

Follows well on the first book, but from somewhere in the middle I hit a stretch of unrelenting dreariness which put me off the book for a good while. Eventually I soldiered on, and it’s fine at the end.

Another Branderson Classic!

Fresh feel to a Branderson classic. The characters are so real, even though set in a deep sci-fi story line. The introduction in Skyward explodes into a fantastical narrative that transports the characters and reader to new realms, taking all on a truly emotional journey that keeps the nerds in us guessing what will be around the next corner!

Skyward was SciFi, Starsight is just Fi

In the first book of the series the author built a solid, planet-sized world based on a believable scenario with just a single superpower added to the hero, and a few shortcuts taken. Anyway the reader had an idea of what should be possible, could anticipate and judge the performance of the characters within that set world. Starsight is different. All the wold's boundaries are off and the made-up things are so numerous that there is nothing to relate to. There is always a new surprise from a new source, and the final "Nth dimension ex machina" is the worst. The hero does nothing, she just watches as new circumstances crop up, unexplained, all around her. Maybe if this was the 4th or 5th book in the series, and the facts were introduced more slowly, it could have made sense. But as it is, I don't understand what happened, how much of a happy end it was and if it was a happy end at all. Quite disappointing.

Great story brilliantly performed

Excellent series - Brandon Sanderson at his very best. Sophie Alfred’s performance is truly a masterpiece, unbelievably perfect.
