Summary

All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumours of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them.

Spensa is sure there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars - and it was terrifying. What she learned turned her world upside down. Everything Spensa's been taught is a lie.

But Spensa also learned a few things about herself - and she'll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to.

Safe 2nd instalment

This is definitely in the Sanderson Young Adult category. The writing is good, but not quite his exceptional world-building standard. It's a good second instalment, and you can see plot starting to grow (although this time, I guessed the plot twist!).
It's a steady, fun sci-fi story - but not earth-shatteringly brilliant. Still, if you're a Sanderson fan, then this won't disappoint you (but I'm not giving my usual 5-star-devotee plug).

Great book, and excellent voice actor

After the first book, I had big expectations for starsight.

As usual, Sanderson does not disappoint. great story, twists and mysteries you won't see coming, and great characters.

The voice actor was perfect, really brought the characters to life.

Not sure why, but it's boring.

I love Sanderson novels I've got loads of them and always look forward to a new one. Unfortunately for some reason I'm finding Starsight a bit of a slog. I like that we're peeling back the layers of the Human/Superiority mystery but we're doing so really slowly, and the intrigue is just a bit boring. The action feels distant and disconnected without much at stake so it doesn't pep the rest up really. Spin is still an interesting character, you can feel the misguided paranoia washing off her and of course the interplay between her and the ship is great, but the other characters are kind of meh so far.

Finished it in two days

I started skyward about five days ago, started starsight yesterday, and guess what book I’ll be buying today?
Haha but with a more serious tone -
I liked it a lot, the narrating done perfect to match the storyline. Spenca being a very interesting character to begin with, going through several arcs in the first book and yet having more room to grow in this one. I might argue she made more progress here than in the last book- which I LIKE.
But I must say, skyward series feels, so far, like the Mistborn saga in a different suit.
I’m hoping the third book will bring some more change to familiar patterns, such as The inspiring martyr, Who knew little of the scope of the war he had ignited- somewhat mistaking the enemy. A People deprived of knowledge of the past. The monarchy discovered to be somewhat of a necessary evil, with flaws to be fixed. And a lovely relationship between a skillful, brash, instinct based girl with a magic that the ones around her do not understand, and a calm, logical, trusting partner, releasing himself from the Constraints of highborn society.
I’m a Brandon Sanderson fan and growing, but that doesn’t mean I will blindly ignore repetitive patterns. That’s it I’m giving this a full five star because honestly, I laughed I got the thrill and my heart was broken. So all boxs is checked.

I didn't mean to buy a kids book!

.... but I really liked it anyway. Great story, and really good narration. I've already read the Stormlight series and Brandon's style still works in this young adult book.

I really enjoyed the more espionage style of this book and it was a great progression from the first one. So excited for the next one!

I knew it, I knew it

And it was still very satisfying to hear “the secret”
I love this book, very entertaining and also helps putting things in perspective about how we think of people who are different to us.
I don’t know why M-Bot has a Scottish accent but I like it.

Kind of ok

Follows well on the first book, but from somewhere in the middle I hit a stretch of unrelenting dreariness which put me off the book for a good while. Eventually I soldiered on, and it’s fine at the end.

Another Branderson Classic!

Fresh feel to a Branderson classic. The characters are so real, even though set in a deep sci-fi story line. The introduction in Skyward explodes into a fantastical narrative that transports the characters and reader to new realms, taking all on a truly emotional journey that keeps the nerds in us guessing what will be around the next corner!

Too long

Too long, too much pointless teenage angst and a super annoying wannabe Scottish accent that the narrator use for the robot. It feels like one of those nickle a dime novels from when authors were paid by the word count.

Felt stretched out, struggled to finish

I had listened to Skyward #1 narrated by Suzy Jackson, and initially stalled on reading this book because the narrator had changed. I just couldn't imagine anyone else being Spencer. I came back though, because I really wanted to see where the story goes. Unfortunately it wasn't as good as book 1.

The main thing was that I struggled to finish this book. it was stretched out way too much, without as much depth in the plot or the new characters being introduced. There were chapters where the main character randomly gets sidetracked to have a lengthy conversations which don't lead anywhere, don't add to other character's development and have no payoff at the end. In book 1 we saw the main character go through several big events, some of which would be enough to add a layer of maturity. but the character felt as naive and clueless as if none of those events ever occurred.

The story is there, the universe the author has created is interesting. this book however could've been much shorter, and it would've been a fun 0.5 sequel to an amazing first book.
