Summary

Sixty-thousand light-years from Earth, the corrupt Terran Confederacy holds the Koprulu sector tightly in its tyrannical grip, controlling every aspect of its citizens' lives. One man dares to stand up to this faceless empire and vows to bring it to its knees: Arcturus Mengsk - genius propagandist, tactician, and freedom fighter.

A monstrous act of bloody violence sows the seeds of rebellion in Arcturus, but he is not the first Mengsk to rail against such oppression. Before Arcturus grew to manhood, his father, Angus Mengsk, also defied the Confederacy and sought to end its brutal reign.

The destiny of the Mengsk family has long been tied to that of the Confederacy and the Koprulu sector, but as a new empire rises from the ashes of the past and alien invaders threaten the very existence of humanity, what will the future hold for the next generation?

Damn this book for making me understand Mengsk!

This is a wonderfully crafted tale spun around one of my most hated characters in video games, and yet Graham McNeil manages to make me relate to Mengsk through this story...
While not respecting Mengsk, now understanding his motivations and how he got to where he was made me think of him as a rounded character instead of a hated enemy...
Damn you Graham McNeil!

Neil Kaplan brings it! I had to look up if he actually voiced Mengsk in the games, his rendition is that pitch perfect which is extremely important for a book on a character which already has a voice...
The time flew by and a large part of that was how perfectly Neil voiced every single character!

Please Blizzard, make him voice more Starcraft books <3

I, Listener

The story was actually quite boring and slow, and it didn't give too much to the StarCraft universe. Sure, some previously unknown background was given, but I expected much more. Also the famous events from the games could have been touched more. I think MUCH more could have been made from this topic.
The performance however was exceptional. All the different voices gave life and authenticity to the known characters, and belivability to the rest. Every scene felt honest and real and not just like reading a book aloud.
All in all, I think it is a good pick for StarCraft fans, while driving or swimming, just don't listen to it as full attention entertainment, and don't expect anything surprising or enlightening from the story.

Good

The only part that I dislike is the child voice acting. It literally made me cringe when hearing the "children's" voices
