Summary

New from million-copy best seller M.R. Forbes.

One man's epic story of loyalty, perseverance, and hope in a galaxy at war.

Alliance Navy Commander Grayson Stone is patrolling a nearby space station, when a mysterious starship appears. It emerges from a storm of fire, its shields impenetrable, its weapons overwhelming, attacking without provocation and annihilating everything in its path.

While his ship is badly damaged in the assault, Grayson manages to survive. Suddenly trapped behind the front line of the invasion and faced with gut-wrenching choices and near-impossible odds, he'll do whatever it takes to escape the grasp of the terrifying new enemy.

Because, if he fails, humankind will fall.

Absolutely loved this book

I enjoyed the pace of the story and how it builds. One of the main characters Commander Stone is a guy trying to serve and do his job - he is guarded and focused on doing the right thing at any cost. There is a smouldering pace throughout the book that I enjoyed whilst just waiting for all hell break lose. I am huge fan of M R Forbes books and have spent many hours listening to them. If Star Fire is anything to go by then this is going to be another great series. Sure, it ends on a cliff hanger but boy it leaves you wanting more. I am defiantly invested and can’t wait to hear what happens in the next book.

My First Rule Was Broken

I did enjoy this book...however...I have a personal rule that the author should not assume a successful series in the first installment. To start a series and leave the first book in a cliff hanger should never happen. This is a personal opinion of mine but the first book in any series should be, for the most part, standalone. Then let the reader decide if it would be worth continuing with future installments. I may...or may not purchase book 2. As for Jeffrey Kafer's narration...he always gets 5 stars from me.

Fast and Enjoyable

Fast, enjoyable sci-fi book. Characters were well done, story ramped up and moved at a good pace. Plenty of room left in the back story to develop in future books. A bit of a cliff hanger ending, but main story was completed. I will continue the series.

Non-stop Sci-fi Action!!!

Short, simple, and sweet Sci-fi space story! It's action packed from start to finish and forces the MC to partner up with a life time enemy to overcome overwhelming odds against an alien invasion. Very satisfying and definitely looking forward to book 2. Interplanetary space travel, space ship dogfights, aliens, and a whole lot of awesome. What more could you ask for?

Brilliant...simply brilliant!

Fantastic premise and incredible character development for book one in a series! I am a huge fan of all M.R. Forbes' work, but was totally engaged from the first chapter. The detail with the technology was intriguing, yet easy to comprehend and visualize. Can't wait to see what happens next!

A writer you have to check out

Star Fire is a story that needs to be heard. Forbes delivers a fine sci-fi survival narrative, presented in first person, that paints a picture of a horrible alien first contact. The characters will become endeared to you throughout and you will find yourself pulling hard for their victories. The presentation put me in mind of Philip K. Dicks style in "Do Androids dream of electric sheep" The narration is fantastic, and there is no filler in the plot used to drag out pages. Most importantly it left me craving more, to continue the story, to see the characters unfold further and see how it all finally ends. Wonderful work by a fantastic author

An explosive beginning!

Star Fire is an explosive beginning to what is a great new series by writer M.R. Forbes! The book has been narrated expertly be Jeffrey Kafer. The story keeps you hooked throughout as Grayson Stone does what needs to be done when lesser men would succumb. Being written in first person tense is interesting to listen to. It works for the story being told and allows us a more in-depth look at the mental state of Grayson and his experiences. The narration gives life to the characters as you would expect from a professional like Jeffrey Kafer and it really helps pull you in. I didn’t want to turn the book off at times because I just wanted to hear what happens next. I highly recommend it to any and all Sci-Fi fans. I personally can’t wait to get ahold of the next book in the series.

Narrator attacks his listeners.

This is only half a book. Nothing is resolved. I would like to say I really liked the story but I have only seen half of it. Having said all of that I am getting the second book but if this turns out to be a serial then book two is as far as will go.RBD

Action, twists, characters to relate to

I'll make no secret of this: I read just about everything MR Forbes puts out. Whilst the Forgotten Earth saga and Hayden Duke are my faves, Stars End marks a leap into a new universe for me. I wasn't disappointed. Rather than rehashing the plot, I'll tell you what worked for me. Navy pilot Grayson Stone is a middle aged dude with a family he loves. He's ticking off the years until retirement in an outpost of the galaxy where not much happens. He loves his wife and kids. He has a past he's hidden. He's partnered with a much younger female pilot and treats her like a daughter, rather than a creepy sleaze. The character is easy to relate to and cheer for. You get a glimpse of his ordinary world as it gets torn apart and he's thrown from one situation to the next. The supporting characters have Forbes's usual mix of morally grey people with their own agendas, often at odds with Grayson's, and a few complete self-important a*seholes who do dumb things and thankfully, learn quick or get killed. Then there's the alien menace which is nicely foreshadowed and revealed. The pace is fast, but with enough breathing space for world building and characterisation. I will warn you that the book ends on a cliffhanger. Jeffery Kafer's narration of the audiobook is excellent. I wish the next one was out. *I was given a review copy of the audiobook by the author. This is an honest review. I totally loved the book and will be heading straight into the next one on my Kindle

awesome book

this is the second time I've read this book. the second time I got the audio version. the book was amazing and I enjoyed the story very much! I don't usually get the audiobook but I thought I would try it. the narration seemed a little bit forced like the character was mad at all the time kind of threw me off a little.he seem to have the same tone throughout the book.
