Editor reviews

"Stagecoach" (originally called "Stage to Lordsburg") is a 1937 short story by the prolific pulp writer Ernest Haycox, of whom Ernest Hemingway once said, "I read The Saturday Evening Post whenever it has a serial by Ernest Haycox". "Stagecoach" famously inspired the 1939 movie of the same title, effectively launching John Wayne's career.

Though the story is short, its characterizations are deep, and 2003 Audie Award winner Rick Rohan further distinguishes each western traveler in the narrative with his varied and resonant performance. Haycox's story stands out amongst its contemporaries in not resorting to caricature to make an impact. Rohan seems to understand the author's intent, and he delivers the dialogue smoothly and distinctly without a lot of bells and whistles.
