Summary

A rich, compelling and laugh-out-loud new series for all teen, YA, adult and fantasy fans.

How do you survive a mage's duel without magic? Kellen's about to risk everything: his family, his home, even his own life....

When you're a Jan'Tep initiate approaching your 16th birthday, you'd better be ready to prove your worth as a mage. Either that or have a miracle on the way. And Kellen isn't counting on either. He knows he'll need a few tricks up his sleeve to avoid disgracing his family and becoming a Sha'Tep servant. So when a sassy, straight-talking traveller arrives in town, Kellen is all ears. Ferius Parfax is jaded but worldly, an exile who lives by her wits and the three decks of cards she carries. She can't teach him to spark his bands and access the seven magics, but with the hand that Kellen's been dealt, he knows he needs all the help he can get....

Audible needs to create a YA section

I’ve said before that I have no objection to YA books but I’d rather know in advance if that is what I’m buying. The book itself is fine and I’d definitely buy it for a younger reader.

Great narration and story!

Fabulous reading of a fabulous book! It's only my 3rd audiobook but if I keep listening to great ones like this I will be spending all money on them!

Definitely a teens book rather than adult

I thoroughly enjoyed the Great Coats books, this was also well written and fun but lacked the ‘realism’ of language and behaviourist those books. I will continue to read them but would love to see the Great Coats or a new adult fantasy series.

Spells and action what can be better

I did enjoy the first book of the series and will continue to next books. Plenty of interesting magic and so many fights. Narration well done

Solid start

Good book, like the greatcoats its about betrayal and secret machinations with a veneer of action over the top. I like the shadowblack and hope that plays a prominent part in the rest of the series

Kept me interested.

The name first caught my attention. Then after getting through half of it I started to feel disappointed it wasn't mainstream predictable. It didn't play out as I expected. Then after finishing it, I was grateful it wasn't mainstream predictable.

Magic, An Unsure Teen, Conspiracy

This book has everything to keep you enthralled.

Read it - what have you got to lose? You can always ask for your credit back but I would think only a very few ask.

Not many teens don’t make me think how stupid they are in a story but here you have a typical teenage boy who acts as you expect but cares.

Go on try it - I did and bought the others available on Audible and hope they arrange to have the rest very soon.

Amazing story and amazing narration

I loved the entire series there was great character and plot development along with some great humour.
One thing I would say is that there is a slight theme of Kelen saving ‘damsels in distress’ which gets a little old after a while

Phenomenal

Well holy $#!+ that was great. I BLEW through this, listening every chance I got. Although I'll very likely grab a hard copy of this book to cherish, I wholeheartedly recommend listening to it, as the narration is sublime, and Sebastien's wit lends itself perfectly to vocal performance.

Enjoy!

Magical experience

What an entertaining and engaging story with fun diverse characters. The dialogues were so good and the humor was spot on! This story has an interesting magic system which was one of the main reasons I picked up this book. And hats off to a fantastic narrator's work, so many characters and they all had their unique voices - at times it felt like not one but a whole cast of actors working. Really brought this book to life. I can heartily recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy with more action that worldbuilding. Will be looking into other books in this series for sure!

Magic is a con game.

A magic-less boy tries to find his place among a town full of magic folk.

3.5 stars rounded up. Very fun.

That ending! *screams* I love it!
The story was very intriguing to me, but I didn't like most of the characters.

I did not like the sister or the love interest. The sister was arrogant and whenever she made an appearance, she was a) shunning Kellen, b) using Kellen for meanial tasks, or c) trying to awaken Kellen's powers. Maybe it was her first appearance, (view spoiler) that I just didn't trust her. I did not care for the love interest at first. She didn't have much personality and after (view spoiler), I was done with her. (Also, after that incident, Kellen fears she's mad at him because he slapped her. Wtf.) The author does try to make you feel sorry for her but I. Can't.

Kellen is funny but I hope his character develops.

I hope to see more of Ferius.

I thought I'd love squirrel-cats but I hate them.
