Summary

Now includes the Spectral Detective prequel mini-story, "Deathday."

A ghost turned private investigator must rescue the souls of murder victims to atone for his mortal sins.

Jake Fletcher is an ex-exorcist. No, that wasn’t a stutter.

Once upon a time, he evicted ghosts for a living, at least until he got killed and became one. Now he works the streets as a phantom detective, offering his services to lost souls trapped between this world and the next.

But will good deeds buy him a ticket to the Good Place, or is he destined to walk the earth as a phantom for all eternity?

In the spirit of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, mystery, scares, and the paranormal collide in this bizarre noir. The Spectral Detective Three-Book Collection combines the first three books in the Spectral Detective series:

  • Spectral Detective
  • Corpse Reviver
  • Twice Damned

Uncanny listen

This is the first time I’ve listened to anything by this author, and I was pleasantly surprised. The books were funny, sometimes a little on the “oh, did he really say that?” side, but it only added to the enjoyment for me.

Set in London, the humour was very British, again another huge plus point for me. I went into listening to this collection of books with no expectations of what was going to happen or what the storyline was, it’d come recommended and I’m glad it did.

Jake is, surprise surprise a spectral detective, but there’s a twist in the tale, one I’m not going to tell you as it’s revealed in the first book, but this sets him off on a journey which weaves its way through the collection and throws a twist at the end I never saw coming.

Well written, the characters literally came to life (pardon the pun), and it was a collection I thoroughly enjoyed becoming absorbed in.

The humour at times had me laughing out loud, which given I listen to audio while out shopping in supermarkets made me wonder when I’d get one of those self hugging jackets at times.

Narrator Mark Restuccia’s vocal skills and natural comedic delivery of even the most subtle of punchlines is totally on point and adds a whole new dimension to this book. Add in the ability to voice different characters he really brought these books to life and made me want to keep listening. It was clear to me just how much he enjoyed reading these, it came through in the narration.

I would highly recommend this audio,

Great series

Format: audiobook
Narrator: Mark Restuccia

The narrator does a great job except what was slightly annoying is that there are sentences in this that sound like its being read by someone else or was recorded/added at a different time? It’s noticeable so breaks the flow somewhat.

Deathday
This is a prequel to the Spectral Detective series and it’s a great start.
Jake Fletcher is an exorcist who thinks he’s laying spirits to rest but things are about to change for him. This character is witty and has a gruff charm, he’s a likeable rogue that’ll have you rooting for him in no time.
An enjoyable introduction to how Jake’s afterlife career as a spectral detective begins.

Bk 1: spectral detective
Jake Fletcher has been trying to stay off the radar of the big man upstairs so he can atone for some of his sins in life before his judgement. When a skinned corpse is found our spectral detective is just the man, sorry, ghost for the case.
Awesome story with a twist I didn’t see coming. Jake’s character is sarcastic and humorous which makes him relatable and very likeable.

Bk 2: corpse reviver
Jake Fletcher ghost detective’s life, or rather afterlife, is never dull.
This case is an attention grabber with a necromancer, vampires and an angel that’s determined to drag Jake back, kicking n screaming if necessary, to face judgement but before that happens our quirky witted spook is determined to wipe his slate clean or at least have it tilted in his favour. I’m really enjoying this whole world.

Bk 3: twice dammed
Jake’s latest case is Hell, quite literally!
Several revelations for Jake in this one as he unravels the mystery behind a break in and tries to help a tricked soul.
Another very enjoyable story, if you’re looking for a read/listen that’s fun and entertaining then this world is for you.

Loved every minute

Enjoyable from start to finish made me laugh out loud and couldn't wait to start listening again each time I had to pause it. I purchased the first book in the series , I was really enthralled by it and wanted to hear more so I bought the 3 book collection with the bonus book DeathDay which tells how Jake becomes a ghost in the first place.
Mark Restuccia is excellent he is for me now the voice of Jake Fletcher like what David Jason was to Del Boy.
His story telling abilities are second to none in my opinion and because of him I have now bought the other 2 books in the uncanny kingdom collection which carrys on the storyline of Jake partnered with his zombie self solving murders.
Looking forward to starting those.

“About as useful as Aquaman in Iraq”

A really enjoyable listen that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Some great plot ideas and great fight scenes with an MC overflowing with charm and sarcasm.
Really well narrated, Mark pulls off the atmosphere and voices really well (although a couple of the peripheral characters sound a little Horrid Henry.
All in all, definitely worth the listen!
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.

⭐⭐ EXCELLENT ⭐⭐

This is simply a excellent set of books I first came across Frank in a Necessary Evil and loved it he has become one of my favourite characters. So I had to hear his back story and was not disappointed. the story and humor is spot on. in these 3 books Frank is learning and homing in on all he supernatural abilities. these books take us from the streets of London to the depths of hell & a rather dangerous encounter with death himself. This supernatural pulp fiction style detective comedy thriller is a must for anybody.

The Uncanny Delivers Another Spectral Blow

What can I say? David Bussell has done it again! The Uncanny world Mr Bussell has built is one of magic, mystery, magicians, and all manner of creatures you thought you knew but you really don't. Fairys are not sweet little imp-like creatures, and sometimes a brick wall is not...a brick wall, sometimes it is a blind alley.
This world is rich with characters from all manner of lore and legend yet David Bussell has managed to tweak them just ever so slightly to add his vision of what the uncanny creature is in his world.
This three-book series takes us from when Jake Fletcher steps (cough) from the living world into his ghost self and through the story of how he tries to repent for the things he did wrong in his living life that he can amend in his dead one by helping as many souls find the light and give them the ability to ascend.
I am never one for spoilers so I will avoid detail...but I will not avoid is raving about just how much I enjoyed this trilogy. I look forward to hearing more from this spectral detective and other characters in this frightful yet amazing uncanny world.

Mark Restuccia narrating the voice of Jake was totally genius. His tone and acting brought visions of Danny Dyer to mind when voicing Jake. 10/10 for narration, dialogue voice acting, and bringing emotion to the tough "detective".

Loved this 3 book Jake Fest!

I am a huge fan of all the Uncanny series! You fall a little in love with each of the characters along with all their weird & wonderful personalities. Stuffed with humour, sarcasm, thrills & spills. Jake the spectral detective has some great hairy moments trying to solve horrible murders & trying to gain brownie points to stop him from being sent to hell for eternity!

#teamjake

I almost gave up hope, but got salvation and redemption at the 11th hour and end of the book. I was teamjake from the start. He had a good heart and got takem in by evil doers time and again. I found this entertaining and interesting and enjoyed it. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job bringing it to life.

Unusual and intriguing!

Spectral Detective: A Three-Book Collection: An Uncanny Kingdom Urban Fantasy
Spectral Detective Collection 1
By: David Bussell
Narrated by: Mark Restuccia
This was quite the series! Unusual and intriguing! It covers the first three books and the prequel called "Death Day". This poor guy goes through so much but keeps going! He's got spunk! He runs away from the office where the dead go to be sorted. That takes spunk!😁 First he is a guy that does exorcisms for a living then he gets murdered. Then he takes up being a ghost detective. He deals with not only other ghosts but demons, vampires, and more. Never a dull moment! Clever, great characters, and terrific fantasy!

Not Speaking the Queen's English? You'll Be Bored

OK...The premise is excellent. What's not to like about a Ghost Detective/Exorcist (a nod to Harry Dresden style of book)...But sometimes the obviously English narrator is just annoying.......I put this book down and have not finished it.....the performance is just a distraction from the story.....unless you're from "over the pond" this book is borderline unlistenable. Pick up the "Dresden Files" or the "Max Porter" Series for some great work in the same vein, but you can understand what the narrator is saying. Probably better off reading the book instead of being pissed at the narrator.

3 books in 1 Good entertainment!

I found these books good entertainment and enjoyable. The main character is a interesting mix of street wise and naive, kind of a (Ha Ha) lost soul sort to speak. I thought the Narrator did a good job ( like the various accents).
worth the $ or credit again 3 books for price of 1!

So that's how a Spectral Detective operates

Jake, the spectral detective is the luckiest stupid detective I've read/listened to since detective Dev Haskel. Difference being Dev is a living horn dog. I can't say I didn't like the book but I can't admit that I did so I guess I'm caught in the middle, trapped in limbo kinda like Jake. The 3 stories flowed seamlessly from beginning to end I found myself interested in how he was going to get his stupid ass out of the next situation that he seemed to walk into with his corporeal eyes wide open. And don't get me started on his wife, OMG I'm pretty sure I know that woman. However, since he (Jake) used the......oops I almost gave it away, oh well I guess you'll have to get the book and then we'll talk. In short BUY THE BOOK!!!! P.S. Mark Restuccia was the perfect narrator.
