When Vadim Scorlenski and his elite Spetznaz squad are sent to New York at the height of the Cold War, they're told it's a 'training exercise.' They discover, too late, that the 'practice' chemical weapon they're carrying is all too real. They go to their deaths...

...and awaken to a city overwhelmed by the walking dead, even now spreading across the globe. Somehow holding onto their identities amid the mindless monsters, Scorlenski and his squad of zombie commandos set out to return to Russia.

Someone's going to pay.

A Russian special forces unit is sent to New York to collect a package, and in turn ends up releasing a zombie apocalypse on the world. However, the members of this unit, while turned, retain their personalities and identities. I do like this approach to a zombie novel, giving something familiar yet a little different. And being set in the 80's when the Cold War is ongoing adds to the premise and drama.

The cast of characters are great, with each standing out on their own. Some I liked, some I most definitely did not, and some lay somewhere in the middle. But all of them came together well and played their part in the overall story, shockingly at times.

Spec Ops Z is a fantastic idea that Gavin Smith manages to pull off in style, delivering a quick and easy listen that is tied up nicely. I wouldn't mind reading more in this setting. Andrew Byron also deliver a great performance, nailing tone and characters throughout - a pleasure to listen to.

Zombie Special Forces FTW!
