Marie Laure lives with her father in Paris within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of the locks (there are thousands of locks in the museum). When she is six, she goes blind, and her father builds her a model of their neighbourhood, every house, every manhole, so she can memorise it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane. When the Germans occupy Paris, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure's agoraphobic great uncle lives in a tall, narrow house by the sea wall.

I would have loved to give this book six stars!
This was such an unusual book compared to the usual thrillers. I really loved the fact that the author was also the narrator she really brought the story to life. I was enthralled by the actions of Erin and Mark and how it all unfolded, it is easy to see how a seemingly normal couple can be drawn to the dark side. I had a job to stop listening and wanted to keep going until it was finished. At first I could not see how all the pieces fitted together but as it became clearer I had to admit that is was a very clever plot. I can't wait for Steadman's next book.

Good story line
I found this to have a good storyline that could easily translate to a film in future. Nice twists along the way. I would say that it was a bit too descriptive in parts and could have been edited down a fair bit without losing anything in the plot detail.
The writer has narrated this herself and I found that the main character sounded completely bland throughout - without character so to speak. There was also a clicking sound through parts of the recording. This made it a hard listen to be honest, but I persevered because the story was good.

Cleverly written and a truly enthralling listen
In this novel we follow Erin a documentary filmmaker and newlywed to investment banker Mark.
These two are passionately in love but not without their issues. Mark has lost his job and therefore direction, Erin is embarking on a new documentary documenting prisoners who are soon to leave prison. We follow them on their dream honeymoon where things take a turn, and one decision impacts their future and their lives.
Without giving any spoilers this is not a romantic novel this has wonderful twists and turns and challengers that you feel like you are being taken along for.
This debut novel from Catherine Steadman is enthralling and you genuinely will not want to put it down.

LOVED THIS!
I think the writer being the narrator really helps the story come to life in the way she intended. how it was written made you feel like you were there in person and got involved in the lives of these people. really interesting story and not necessarily the ending you expect when you start listening. very well done!

Complete and utter rubbish!
I deserve a medal for making it to the end of this book. Having listened to around 80 audible books I can honestly say this is the worst book I have purchased. The story is completely unrealistic, far fetched, complete nonsense and around 70% of the book is just words to fill space, it could have been wrapped up in 2 hours. The narration is the worst I have listened to, I can hear the saliva in her mouth with every word and there's a weird clicking noise at the end of sentences. I am so glad it's finished. I only listened to the end because I thought it may have improved. It didn't. And we never did find out who the "plane people" were. Do not waste your time on this one.

Wow... just wow!
After having three children in two and a half years I never seem to have the free time to read books or stay conscious long enough to read more than a few pages! So the fact I have been able to literally digest this book in a week speaks volumes for how good it is! It has me immediately googling Catherine Steadman to find more reading material! Excellent read, very clever and quite an unexpected ending!

A REAL TREAT - BEST THRILLER FOR AGES!
LOVED this book and really savoured it, loved the way it was written with so many little nuggets of interest/trivia/general knowledge built in along the way which was an added bonus - loved the escapism of the location - like going on a fab holiday and have long wanted to go to Bora Bora ever since I read it on a Monopoly card as a child. I loved also the way the book was narrated by the author who is better known as an actress - so we heard it just the way it was supposed to be read and professionally read too as sadly some authors do not make good narrators. Although I did not warm to the characters, I did find them interesting and enjoyed the glamour of their luxurious lifestyle - so many thrillers are kitchen sink dramas literally with character stirring saucepans of beans and doing washing up, I loved hearing about intrigue and exotic places and even what fabulous underwear was packed for the honeymoon although would have thought designer bikinis might have been of more use. Anyway, loved it all, twists and turns, thrills and spill, plenty of suspense, mystery and intrigue, exotic places, glam lifestyles and very well written - cannot wait for the next one - hurry up and get writing Catherine!!!

An incredible audiobook
I didn’t expect much from this book, I prefer a book with other listeners reviews but I think there was only one. I had never heard of the author but thought sounds interesting so I will give it a go. I am so pleased I did, what a book could not stop listening. Very well written and read and most importantly, to me anyway, it is believable. One of the best listens for a long time.

Ridiculous thought processes going on here.
I enjoyed the start of this story because the characters were likeable & interesting. However, as the tale progressed, I couldn't believe how stupid the reactions & thinking of those same characters could be. My annoyance with the inconsistency of the personalities spoilt the enjoyment of the whole production.
