Authentic, profound, valuable

Reginald Ray sets out a journey with profoundly transformative potential. There are many in this field and few I trust and feel are authentic teachers rather than seekers of attention. There is very little of what I'd call speudo-science in this sequence of discussion and guided meditations (there is a bit) and a great deal of wisdom is passed on from a lifetime's study and practice, including learning from (by his own admission) his own mistakes. Not all of this works for me: there are steps I struggle with (some of the out of body visualisation was a step too far) and as it's set out as a sequence I found myself uncertain as to whether it was worth pursuing or if, having 'failed' (to my mind) to do what I felt was being asked, the rest of the journey was futile. I believe not and that there is value to be found in doing what one can and observing and not judging what one can't. The ideas put forward by Reginald Ray do not disparage other religions, or secular beliefs but explore every-day experiences of our existence and values and the way our minds work. Accessible. Wise. Worthy of close attention and reflection.

Great meditation guide

I love Reggie Ray. He has a pretty unique approach which speaks to me a lot. I highly recommend this book is you're dabbling in meditation or if you've tried other approaches and want a fresh view. He has the perfect audio book voice too.

Life changing

Beautifully read, soothing to listen to but above all a profound practice which - for me - brings together yoga nidra, vipassana, somatic experiencing and takes it much deeper.

Gives me bad vibes and feel like I'm hyonotised

The message is not resonating my instincts tell me very much so that this is manipulation and trickery, to twist knowledge to make you see your body and the earth as the greatest. I think it is an inversion of true Buddhist teachings found in a very obscure black sect of the vajrasattva

Have every audio of Reggie Ray. Was scared this was going to just be a repeat of his other work. I was pleasantly surprised. The wisdom that he shares is so enlightening.

love these meditations

Would you consider the audio edition of Somatic Descent to be better than the print version?

I enjoy the audio because I believe it helps with the meditation process in the beginning.

Reconnect with the wisdom of the body

Okay so far but slow.

I'm liking some of the "notes" he's hitting but the way he talks with so many pauses and so slowly makes it a bit difficult for me to listen to. It's not that the content is "boring" or doesn't seem worthwhile. It's that in how slowly he talks, the pauses that slow up his talking, and how slowly he progresses through it, he drags things out longer than needs be. I bet this program could be at minimum, fit into 75% to 80% of the time taken by the author to present it. So, it's good content so far but you'll have to be rather patient to get it. I'm about 2 hours in and he's finally getting to the first exercise though there have been several times earlier when it seemed as if he would have already presented it. If I finish it I'll update my review.

The sounds of men

If you like listening to the sounds than men make, this is the book for you. Heavy breathing, swallowing, nose and mouth sounds. It's like ASMR, but the opposite of calming.

The material itself is pretty good. Somatic meditation is definitely effective. But I would prefer if it was shortened down to 1/18th of its size. I feel like it is hard to follow just because it is sooo slooow. Definitely not asd friendly. But if you are a non-sensitive, neurotypical individual who has never listened to your body before, this might be just the book for you.

Buddhism Recreated

I am flabbergasted that you have chosen to disrespect traditional Buddhism to this extent. You imply that the body is not properly recognized in Buddhism, which you must know is an untruth. You mention Tibetan Buddhism and it's focus on the mind but most of Asia practices Theravada Buddhism which is focused on the body; body and mind. And a vast aspect of Theravada Buddhism is Vipassana Buddhism which is again body focused. As much of your book as I could bear to listen to has you creating a body focused spiritual system, totally ignoring the dharma of Lord Buddha. This is unacceptable.
To continue to harp on the experiences written by one individual who has suffered a stroke and hold the information as gospel is an insult to those of us who have worked in science, research ,and health. As is the mention of eating behind your dog.
I will return your book.
