Summary

With four years in the Parachute Regiment, 10 years in the SAS and two Everest summits to his name, no one is better equipped than Jay Morton to reveal what it takes to become the best of the best. Soldier is Jay Morton’s masterclass in mindset, strategy and excellence.

Drawing on his extraordinary personal experience, it provides in-depth, comprehensive lessons and practical takeaways. Whether serving as an elite soldier, training as a high-level shooter or becoming an expert in HALO (high-altitude, low-opening) and HAHO (high-altitude, high-opening) parachuting, Jay has always strived to be at the very top of the game. More than most, Jay knows that military service develops skillsets you’d never dreamed of having and which can be applied to our day-to-day lives. We are prone to underestimating ourselves, but physical and mental endurance and resilience - as well as realising our own full potential - are well within our reach.

7 hours you’ll never get back!!

Not a autobiography or a self help book. There are no juicy stories or hints on how to pass selection. Jays narration is very monotone and he mispronounces names of people he quotes.
Seriously not impressed and I’m sure the resistance to interrogation phase isn’t as arduous as listening to this book in its entirety.

Disappointed

I was looking forward to this book for a while and even Pre ordered it. However, it was a massive disappointment. Although I appreciate ex special forces cannot tell you much about operations, most tell you certain things about there own experiences. This is more like an average self help guide. Lost interest half way through and although I’ve tried to listen to more over time, I find myself bored and disinterested within a few minutes.

not what I expected

I expected something gripping and interesting, at the start I thought it was going to be good but it doesn't really go anywhere.

A very dull book with not much to say.

The narration is very monotone. No real story or flow to the book. Nothing really interesting and not motivating whatsoever. Felt like it was being read by a year 11 at assembly. Such a shame as i had high hopes for this book.

Motivation by the bucketful!

I absolutely loved this book.

It’s the story of a man who to date has lived an adventurous, dangerous and ultimately fulfilling life.

Through childhood to into The Parachute Regiment and onto The Regiment, Jay tells the story of what’s required physically and equally important, mentally, to overcome so many of those human emotions and personality traits that can lead to failure if we allow them to.

I loved the fact that although Jay had literally no interest in mountains prior to becoming a member of the SAS, his posting within his Squadron would lead him to two ascents of Everest!!

As an ex Para myself, I’d recommend this book to anyone wanting an insight into life in the military but also to those wishing to have a good business mindset, looking to change life direction or just wanting a pointer in how to be more positive.

Congrats Jay on a great piece of writing and best wishes for the future and all the new challenges it’ll bring.

Simple and straight forward

Listening to this book felt absolutely refreshing. Simple advice from own life experiences with examples that don't go too far but still are personal for Jay. It is his book after all.

I feel like his character was definitely maintained very well, and I loved it.
Lots of inspiration, a book can be both a look-up guide for when dealing with something yourself or just an inspiring story of someone else's life that can make you go "i can do this too".

There's nothing new in the book as such, but it's a different way of putting things together - and sometimes that's just what is needed to get the message through.

On a couple small occasions the tone became a bit monotone, but i also listen about 15-20mins at a time so it wasn't bothering me too much.

Clearly a one of a kind and very down to earth person that I'd love to meet one day.
