Summary

Nobody meant for this to happen.

Facebook didn't mean to facilitate a genocide.

Twitter didn't want to be used to harass women.

YouTube never planned to radicalise young men.

But with billions of users, these platforms need only tweak their algorithms to generate more 'engagement'. In so doing, they bring unrest to previously settled communities and erode our relationships.

Social warming has happened gradually - as a by-product of our preposterously convenient digital existence. But the gradual deterioration of our attitudes and behaviour on- and offline - this vicious cycle of anger and outrage - is real. And it can be corrected. Here's how.

Very Informative

The book outlines many good points and should be listened to for those who use social media.

As someone one who first signed up to social media in 2008 and subsequently gave it up in 2020 the book details many of the concerns I had.

I think people underestimate the negatives consequences associated with social media.

Only time will tell whether we were naive or not.

A must

A complex subject, well researched with a slightly unnerving conclusion - be careful what you wish for! A must read, made easier to process when read by someone else.

Terrifying!

Charles Arthur has, quite literally, put together the reasons for why social media will destroy the society we know. A clear and concise gathering of evidence, reports and anecdotes that should leave no reader with any doubts of just how corrosive and destructive social media are - from body dysmorphia to contributing to the genocide in Myanmar ... current, well written and beautifully narrated by the author. A must listen ...

Had to quit it...

Surely a well researched and a really detailed book, but eventually I had to remove it from my Audible library and stop listening to it because it was just so boring. I'm really sorry for that but true,at least in my case.
