A Rousing Tale

This is classified as a historical fiction novel but it is a western. The protagonist is Frank Burdick who is returning to Calico, his hometown. Frank has been in the East attending medical school. He is now a medical doctor and plans on setting up his practice in his hometown. Only the town has changed; his uncle has been murdered.

The book is well written and meticulously researched. Halleran does a great job in describing the period in history where the story is set in. The plot has some twists and turns and the suspense builds throughout the story. The characters are interesting. Halleran is an excellent storyteller. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and will look for more books by this author.

This book was originally published in 1951. Halleran was born in New Jersey in 1905 and educated in Pennsylvania. He obtained a Master in Education and was a social studies teacher before his writing career took off. His novel “Indian Fighter” won the Spur Award as Best Western Historical Novel.

The book is six and a half hours. Jeff Harding does a good job narrating the book. Harding is an actor and audiobook narrator. This is the first time I have read this author or listened to Harding narrate.
