Summary
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Smoke and Ashes by Abir Mukherjee, read by Simon Bubb.
From the winner of the 2017 CWA Historical Dagger Award.
India, 1921. Haunted by his memories of the Great War, Captain Sam Wyndham is battling a serious addiction to opium that he must keep secret from his superiors in the Calcutta police force.
When Sam is summoned to investigate a grisly murder, he is stunned at the sight of the body: he’s seen this before. Last night, in a drug addled haze, he stumbled across a corpse with the same ritualistic injuries. It seems like there’s a deranged killer on the loose. Unfortunately for Sam, the corpse was in an opium den, and revealing his presence there could cost him his career.
With the aid of his quick-witted Indian Sergeant, Surrender-not Banerjee, Sam must try to solve the two murders, all the while keeping his personal demons secret, before somebody else turns up dead.
Set against the backdrop of the fervent fight for Indian independence, and rich with the atmosphere of 1920s Calcutta, Smoke and Ashes is the brilliant new historical mystery in this award-winning series.
Critic reviews
"Smoke and Ashes is Abir Mukherjee's best book yet; a brilliantly conceived murder mystery set amidst political and social turmoil - beautifully crafted." (CJ Sansom)

Best yet
This is definitely the best novel of the three so far, we learn more about Sgt "Surrender Not" and the complexity of his relationship with his family and his sense of identity in relation to the embryonic Indian nation. The narration is excellent and well paced in a thoroughly engaging presentation. More please!

Loved this book
This has been my favourite in this series so far even though I really enjoyed the previous ones. This story just seemed to flow right from the first page. I love the setting, Abir Mukherjee creates a great atmosphere of the place and times ( not that I was there!) and I love the characters. The narration is brilliant.

Darned Good Yarn!
Having made mustard gases (for non-war uses) and investigated accidental spillages at a chemical plant, this fictionalised account of their effect on soldiers and unknowing Guinea pigs held my attention all the way through.

A wonderful story….
I don’t often write reviews as I read so many books each year but this book is story telling at its very best - I have travelled and worked in India and have (a little!) understanding of its peoples, history and culture. All of which are wonderfully caught here.
Great author and the narrator with a marvellous, understated approach gives just the right atmosphere.
So looking forward to the next episode.

Sam Wyndham is not a very good policeman
Sam seems to miss the bleeding obvious so many times, but it keeps the plot going. I’m hoping Sirindernat will be stepping out of his shadow soon.

Exciting adventure
The story of Captain Wyndham and his sidekick continue apace in the India of the Raj, beautifully brought to life by the excellent narration of Simon Bubb. Fascinating to feel the atmosphere of India as the time of British rule was ebbing away.

Authentic and entertaining. Superb narration and truly evocative of a real time and place in British colonial history.

More Derring Do in the Raj
Another great story in the Wyndham & Surrender Not series. Quite an interesting combo in the modern era of searching for things to be offended about.
It treads the fine line between exciting story and being The Best of British while being firmly on the side of the Indians.
I can recommend it as a great romp through a bygone era and an exciting thriller.
I will be reading the rest of the series it’s a long time till 1947.
