Summary

Brutha is the Chosen One. His god has spoken to him, admittedly while currently in the shape of a tortoise.

Brutha is a simple lad. He can't read. He can't write. He's pretty good at growing melons. And his wants are few.

He wants to overthrow a huge and corrupt church. He wants to prevent a horribly holy war. He wants to stop the persecution of a philosopher who has dared to suggest that, contrary to the Church's dogma, the Discworld really does go through space on the back of an enormous turtle. (Which is true, but when has that ever mattered?) He wants peace and justice and brotherly love. He wants the Inquisition to stop torturing him now, please.

But most of all, what he really wants more than anything else, is for his god to choose someone else....

Please note: This is a vintage recording. The audio quality may not be up to modern day standards.

Critic reviews

"Pratchett is the funniest parodist working in the field today, period." (The New York Review of Science Fiction)
"Terry Pratchett is simply the best humorous writer of the 20th century. Wodehouse, Waugh, Sharpe, etc. all have their merits, sometimes considerable, but Pratchett really is a cut above the rest." (Oxford Times)

terrible recording quality

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

no - because the recording quality was appalling and very hard to put up with

What was one of the most memorable moments of Small Gods?

when the main character plays chess with death

What didn’t you like about Nigel Planer’s performance?

he gabbled and spoke far too fast so much of the writing was lost - the terrible recording quality didn't help the performance at all. The sound level fluctuates throughout

Do you think Small Gods needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No - worked ok as a stand alone story

Any additional comments?

don't convert poor recordings to digital and offer on Audible - it reflects badly on your quality control [or lack of]

Good content dated recording

A good book but the audio track sounds old, it needs to be redone or cleaned up to improve the overall quality

Poor audio quality

I’m afraid that I didn’t finish the book. I got an hour in on my commute and couldn’t handle the fuzzy scratchy audio any longer. It’s a shame, as I’m fond of Sir Terry’s work, but there was no way I was going to listen to this fizzing it’s way through my car stereo for 10 hours worth of driving. Gutted.

Wonderful

An insightful novel which works on a lot of levels, it's an adventure story, a travelogue and a philosophical treatise on the nature of the Church as opposed to religious.

Religion and Philosophy in the Looking Glass.

I return to this story repeatedly and am never disappointed. It may be that Pratchett has a formula but it is put to such good use! Profound, clever and never boring. Nigel Planer gives us yet another flawless reading. He is like the frame to a painting, enhancing without drawing attention to itself.

good book. but bad quality.

a very Good Pratchett book. the one thing I don't like is the bad quality of the recording. it's not great from the start. but gets worse after about half the book. other than that a very enjoyable experience.

Certainly one of Sir Terry's best ever!

Nigel Planer was born to read Pratchett, the characters come ALIVE. Sir Terry's wit and imagination are, as always, superb.

interesting story, excellent narration by Nigel, the story was mabye a bit too much here and there and a few too many characters to keep tabs on. God is good though...

Not really like the other Discworld books

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely. I've yet to find a Terry Pratchett book I haven't loved, and would do anything I can do to expose others to how great the Discworld books are.

What did you like best about this story?

It deals with possibly controversial subject matter in a way that is very thought provoking, and exposes readers to different viewpoints.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me laugh quite frequently. There are also a few bits which are quite sad

Any additional comments?

It's quite clearly still set in the Discworld universe, yet manages to feel quite different by featuring unique characters and settings. I believe it's also set in the past of the main Discworld books.

So good

I am a huge fan of Discworld and am currently re-living them through audiobook. This was so much fun to listen to. Nigel Planer does a great job narrating. I am looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.
