The first time I met Merrick Crawford was during my job interview. Well, technically, I’d met him 20 minutes earlier when he’d barged into a fitting room a few doors down from my appointment. I yelled. He yelled. After an argument while standing in my bra, I proceeded to smash the door into the gorgeous jerk, trying to yank it shut. Until we wound up bickering again during my interview and he told me to go sniff my armpit.

Summary
Since moving to beautiful Cedar Tree, Colorado, Emma Young, mother of one adult daughter, has worked from home doing some online bookkeeping and baking for her best friend's diner to supplement her disability pension. Life has been pretty good, that is until she received a strange phone call that starts an alarming chain of events.
Investigator Gus Flemming is hot on the trail of a bail skip with organized crime connections that bring him to Cedar Tree. Once there, the focus of his investigation lands squarely on the gently rounded shoulders of a vivacious red haired Emma, whose physical limitations have done nothing to dampen her zest for life.
When it becomes clear that Emma is at risk, Gus does't hesitate to step in and protect her. Call it a job with some very hot benefits....

A GOOD STORY
SLIM TO NONE was a really good book for a freebie and I'm glad I took a chance on this new to me author.
The main characters are in their late forties, I loved this and there aren't enough of these types of books. Emma bakes cakes for her local diner and also does book keeping online, when she gets a visit from Gus investigating a case and trying to track down some criminal activity that has lead him to Emma who is all part of the puzzle her world is turned upside down.
I liked Emma she is a strong independent woman with a disability who has started her new life in this small town following her divorce but I suppose things happen for a reason because the moment Emma and Gus meet their is sizzling hot chemistry.
Gus was especially hot, bossy, sexy and all kinds of in control, I loved his character as the hero. Gus comes to Emma's rescue more than once when she is in danger from a dangerous criminal who wants all her files and any evidence of their connection and accounts wiped away and is also willing to wipe Emma away in the process.
Slim to None is a good detective type of plot, full of hotness, twists and turns, contains likeable and interesting characters and I also found myself intrigued by secondary characters too, so I would definitely read more in this series.
I listened to this book in audio and it was difficult to tell at times with so much dialogue but it did sound like third person pov which I don't like in a book to read, so I would have to read a sample first or listen to another in audio.
The only thing that annoyed me was the characters many references to being old, feeling old *cough *cough woman in her forties here and I don't feel old? I even checked to see if the author was young due to these references pretty much painting someone n their forties as being close to death in your late forties but she isn't, which left me confused.
This book is free and I highly recommend one clicking and downloading the audio book.

Not miss this great listen
First one I heard from Freya Baker . It was full of Mystery, suspense, humour and learning to forgive
Love how both main characters meet by chance ove the phone . Love how both made a connection and they both felt it .
Freya had a great style with the story and how Emma the heroine was over 45 and disabled.
Emma and Gus meet under circumstances that were out of their control. Gus had a job to do and find some truths . The truths involved his family and some other characters. Gus wasn’t counting on true love ( everyone around him had conditions to stay or leave) and finding Emma . Gus had a PI firm and he had to get to the bottom of some things.
The narrating team of Tanya Eby and Noel Harrison was right on. I can always count on Tanya to deliver an A plus read

Loved it
I loved Emma and Gus when I read the book and have loved re-reading by audio this time.
Emma taking her life back and living to the best of her ability disabilities be damned. Such a strong woman. Loved the humor between her and Arlene. When things go a little crazy and Gus quickly wedges himself in to Cedar Tree and Emma care, things get a little hot and sexy.
This books is full of suspense and keeps you wanting more needing to know what happens next.

A Perfect Start to the Cedar Tree Series
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I loved this audio version of one of my favorite books. The story grips you from the very beginning and the twists and turns of the storyline keeps the reader engaged and eager to delve deeper into the story. The audio book complements the authors words and gives the reader a greater understanding of the characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Emma is one of my all time favorite characters. Even though she is far from perfect and has health issues, she is far from an invalid. She's smart, funny, passionate, loving and feisty as can be. She's the kind of woman I think we all strive to be, insecurities and flaws and all.
Which character – as performed by Tanya Eby and Noel Harrison – was your favorite?
Emma, I think Tanya Eby did an awesome job as the character. Her voice matched the one I imagined when I first read the book two years ago. Her intonation conveys the emotion and passion that Emma has.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Imperfect people, impossible circumstances, but a perfect love.
Any additional comments?
The Cedar Tree series is one of my very favorites and this audio book makes me want to listen to the entire series.

I want a Gus <3
This book is a perfect example of my AHA moments when I think to myself why did I wait so long to get to it, it has been waiting patiently for a few months now, but life throws me curveballs from time to time. After listening to it, I know I am hooked to the series, good thing all the books are lined up on my iPhone YAY
Loved the story, the content feeling it left me with because of the HEA ending, despite the suspense that had me sitting at the edge of my seat while Gus was searching for Emma or her daughter and best friend. As the story unfolds we get to know the characters, their lives, their hopes, dreams and disappointments. Emma is such a great heroine and I like that she is not perfect or young and she gets her HEA afterall with Gus... He makes me believe they might exist. Loved Emma's BFF, Arlene.
Now for the voices.. OMG what a great combination!!! I loved them both, such a great variation and passion. Mr. Harrison's voice for Gus was so yum, fit him so well. Ms. Eby's voice is pure delight. I can't wait to start the next one in the series.

good story
Emma's introduction to Gus was rather unconventional...he mistakenly called her number and had phone sex. Imagine her surprise, and mortification, when Emma realizes that Gus is the same man hunting down one of her accounting clients. Things heat up pretty quickly between the pair and Gus goes into full-on alpha mode when Emma is a hit-and-run victim. The bad guy in the end is quite a surprise. While the story was good, the male narrator's execution was a bit monotone and difficult to enjoy. I enjoy this author's books so I will press on to the next book in the series.

Love Freya's other books, but not this one
I'm normally a big fan of Freya's writing. I've listened to several of her other books and loved them, but this one was a real miss for me. I never became invested in the story or the characters, and didn't feel any chemistry between Emma and Gus. I feel that was in part due to Tanya Eby's narration. It was lacking.... something. Just a little bland. The story fell a bit short, as well. I'll definitely keep listening to Freya's books, but may jump to another series. If you want to check out some great Freya Barker books, listen to the Rock Point series. You're welcome. 😉

Disabled 5, execution questionable
I just about quit this after the intro. SPOILER ALERT: I don’t know any woman who would bother to stay on the phone for a wrong number that proceeds to spout “dirty” sex talk. I think I was just so incredulous that I kept looking for a better explanation than the one given. Big kudos for another strong portrayal of an older woman, this one who had disabilities. I didn’t care for the narrators who didn’t fit, especially the male one. As usual, this entertaining author didn’t waste any time introducing the two to sex together. Had it not been for the disabled angle, I think I would have given up. Not one of FB’s most shining works.

Loved every minute of it
OMG, who says you can't find love anywhere?
Em wanted to make a change in her life. So she went online and made a friend just like her. After a while she decided to move to Cedar Tree, to be near her friend because her daughter was all grown up and had her own life in Boston. To keep busy and got her an online bookkeeping job and also baked for Arlene's diner.
Gus is a retired cop who started his own investigated office. He had a terrible family who blamed him for what happened to his father and his brother. His mother is in a home with Alzheimer's his father has passed his brother he didn't know.
Em didn't know most of the people that she did her online bookkeeping for. One of the people that she did her online booking for was a criminal he was laundering money from his boss into his own accounts offshore. Em didn't know what to make of his things but she hadn't got paid from her job said she did for the one guy. Every time she would go into town she would see the same truck following her. One day she got a phone call, it was Gus he had called her number by mistake and they had phone sex she felt embarrassed and hung up. A week or so later Gus comes to town. And turns Emma's world upside down.
This is such an excellent story I can't wait to see what comes next
